To have a flock of friendly pigeons, ready to swoop down to eat food from locals and tourists, for more than 4 years now, Mr. Nguyen Van Thong (69 years old, living on Trinh Phong Street, Tan Tien Ward, Nha Trang City) has volunteered to go to 2.4 Square twice a day to feed the pigeons.
Mr. Thong said that every day when he went to exercise, he saw the pigeons flying beautifully in the early morning sun, so he had the idea of feeding the pigeons with the intention of "gathering" a large flock of pigeons. He used his own money to buy rice, and regularly fed the pigeons twice a day, morning and afternoon, regardless of rain or shine. For more than 4 years, the pigeons seemed to have gotten used to the gentle figure of this man. Whenever they saw his figure, hundreds of pigeons spread their wings and circled around the beach, then landed and chirped, competing to pick up the rice from his hands.
From a flock of less than 50 birds, after more than 4 years of regular feeding, the number has now increased to more than 500. In addition to the excitement of tourists checking in with the flock of pigeons when visiting 2.4 Square, local people also regularly bring their families and children to feed and play with the pigeons.
At the request of the Public Service Management Board, at the end of December 2024, Nha Trang City People's Committee assigned the Board to work with Mr. Nguyen Van Thong to agree that he would feed the pigeons at Square 2.4 in the morning and afternoon and would be supported by the city with 2-3 kg of rice per day. At the same time, the task force was assigned to coordinate and support the care of the birds when Mr. Thong was busy. Nha Trang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company will keep the area of Square 2.4 clean, ensuring the long-term maintenance of this activity.
Doves are considered a symbol of peace. The image of flocks of doves flying across the sky at Nha Trang beach has left a sense of peace in the hearts of tourists and locals, especially during the recent spring days of At Ty. Mr. Thong hopes that in the future, more people will take care of and protect the birds so that the square space will be more lively, contributing to bringing the beautiful image of the peaceful Nha Trang city to domestic and foreign tourists.
