On the morning of February 24, the People's Committee of Da Nang City held a press conference to inform about the Quan The Am Festival and receive the certificate recognizing Ma Nhai at Ngu Hanh Son scenic spot as a documentary heritage under the Memory of the World program in the Asia-Pacific region.
Informing the press at the press conference, the representative of the Organizing Committee said: The Quan The Am - Ngu Hanh Son Festival (Da Nang City) is a unique community cultural activity, an effort of local people in restoring and preserving the good traditional values of the nation, an opportunity for Buddhists in particular and the people in general to pray for national peace and prosperity, for all living beings to be happy, to arouse compassion, charity, and goodness in each person, the harmony between Buddhism and the nation, and love for the homeland.
In 2000, the Ngu Hanh Son Quan The Am Festival was listed by the General Department of Tourism as one of the 15 major festivals in the country. In 2021, the Quan The Am - Ngu Hanh Son Festival was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. In 2023, this Festival was hosted by the People's Committee of Da Nang City on a city-level scale.
The festival will take place from March 8, 2023 to March 10, 2023 (February 17 to February 19 of the lunar calendar) with many rich and diverse cultural, artistic, sports, belief and religious activities. The main activities include: The Opening Ceremony will take place at 7:00 p.m. on March 8, 2023 (February 17 of the lunar calendar), including the announcement and awarding of the Vietnam Record Certificate for the largest 24k gold-plated Bodhi Leaf and for the unique 16 colored porcelain paintings inlaid on the walls of the 4 towers of Quan The Am Pagoda.
After the Opening Ceremony, the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Festival will take place at 7:00 a.m. on March 10, 2023 (February 19 of the lunar calendar). This is the official ceremony of the Festival, attracting tens of thousands of Buddhists and people to participate. This year's Festival will be broadcast live on VTV8 channel of Vietnam Television and will have a plaque-posting ceremony at Quan Am Cave, the venue of the Avalokitesvara Festival, Ngu Hanh Son (Da Nang City) - National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Along with that, the Incense Offering Ceremony in Memory of Princess Huyen Tran, the Spring Sacrifice Ceremony to Pray for National Peace and People's Peace. In particular, within the framework of the Festival, there will be a presentation on the value of Ma Nhai Ngu Hanh Son, which has just been recognized by UNESCO as a Documentary Heritage under the Memory of the World Program in the Asia-Pacific region, by Mr. Bui Huu Duoc, former Director of the Department of Buddhism - Government Committee for Religious Affairs.
Also in the program of Quan The Am Ngu Hanh Son Festival, there is the Non Nuoc Fine Art Stone Sculpture Competition 2023 and 05 booths displaying and performing Non Nuoc fine art stone carving; artistic kite flying performance, hot air balloon performance; flower car parade to welcome the Festival; opening of Van Hanh Library with more than 30,000 publications related to Buddhism, national culture...
Religious activities, beliefs, meditation, dharma ceremonies... will also be regularly organized by Quan The Am Pagoda during the Festival.
Throughout the Festival are unique cultural and artistic activities such as the art program welcoming the Festival performed by Trung Vuong Theater; Japanese art performances; Bai Choi singing; Tea corner combined with ethnic music performances; lectures on reading culture; photo exhibitions on Ngu Hanh Son and Ma Nhai Ngu Hanh Son scenic spots; exhibitions of fine arts, paintings, calligraphy, and ornamental rocks; flower lantern festival, campfire; vegetarian cooking art performance; traditional boat racing festival, village flag festival, tug of war... performed by domestic and foreign units.
Also at the meeting, the Organizing Committee informed about the announcement ceremony and awarding of the Certificate of recognition of Ma Nhai at Ngu Hanh Son Scenic Area as a Documentary Heritage under the Memory of the World Program in the Asia-Pacific region.
According to information, on November 26, 2022, at the 9th Plenary Meeting of the Memory of the World Program Committee for Asia-Pacific (abbreviated as MOWCAP), Ma Nhai at Ngu Hanh Son scenic spot was recognized as a documentary heritage under the Memory of the World Program for Asia-Pacific region. This is 1/9 documentary heritages of Vietnam honored by UNESCO (including 3 world documentary heritages and 6 Asia-Pacific regional heritages).
The Ma Nhai stele at Ngu Hanh Son (Da Nang) is a system of 78 documents in Chinese and Nom (Han Nom) characters carved on the cliffs and caves of Ngu Hanh Son, with diverse content, unique forms, and many literary genres of kings, mandarins of the Nguyen Dynasty, high monks, intellectuals, dating from the first half of the 17th century to the 20th century. Of which, at Hoa Nghiem cave there are 20 Ma Nhai stele; Huyen Khong cave is preserving 30 Ma Nhai stele (including the royal writing of King Minh Mang "Huyen Khong Dong"); Tang Chon cave has 20 Ma Nhai stele; Van Thong cave has 02 Ma Nhai stele; Linh Nham cave has 03 Ma Nhai stele. At Van Can Nguyet Quat cave, Thien Phuoc Dia cave, Van Nguyet Coc cave there are 03 Ma Nhai stele written by King Minh Mang in 1837, engraved with the name of the cave and the name of the cave.
The Ma Nhai at Ngu Hanh Son scenic spot is a valuable historical source providing special information such as: The relationship of cultural, economic, political and social exchanges and contacts between Vietnam and East Asian countries such as China and Japan since the 17th century; History of the most prosperous development period of Hoi An trading port and maritime exchanges in the Asia-Pacific region... The Ma Nhai here also shows the appearance and original beauty of Ngu Hanh Son scenic spot - a scenic area known as "Southern Chau's number one scenic spot". The Ma Nhai also contribute to clarifying the life views and philosophies of influential figures in Vietnamese history such as: Truong Quang Dan, Cao Xuan Duc, Bui Van Di, Dao Tan, Nguyen Trong Hop...
According to the Organizing Committee of the press conference, to honor, introduce and promote the special values of history, culture, literature, calligraphy and art of Ma Nhai at Ngu Hanh Son Scenic Area, on February 2, 2023, the People's Committee of Da Nang City issued Plan No. 21/KH-UBND on organizing the ceremony to receive the Certificate of recognition of Ma Nhai at Ngu Hanh Son Scenic Area as a Documentary Heritage under the Memory of the World Program in the Asia-Pacific region.
The People's Committee of Da Nang City will continue to direct the Department of Culture and Sports and the People's Committee of Ngu Hanh Son District to better perform the task of preserving and promoting the value of this precious heritage; considering this a mission to protect and promote the value of Ma Nhai at Ngu Hanh Son scenic spot worthy of its status as a world documentary heritage; at the same time, raising the sense of responsibility of organizations and individuals in protecting and promoting the value of cultural and historical heritage in general and of Ma Nhai at Ngu Hanh Son scenic spot in particular./.
