A handshake that kills two birds with one stone

Serbia is considered by the EU as a candidate for membership but is very concerned about Kosovo, about democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Serbia, as well as about Serbia maintaining cooperative relations with both China and Russia. In this context, the above lithium cooperation agreement brings many benefits to both sides at the same time.

Representatives of Serbia and the EU signed the agreement

Lithium is a material that is considered to be of strategic importance to high-tech developing economies. Serbia’s lithium reserves can meet about 17% of the EU’s total lithium demand. This agreement helps the EU significantly reduce its imports of lithium from China, while also pushing China out of this investment cooperation deal. In addition, the agreement is also a way for the EU to tie Serbia to the bloc, separating Serbia from China and Russia. Isn’t this a double benefit for the EU?

As the largest foreign investment cooperation project ever for Serbia, the agreement promises billions of euros in direct revenue for the country. Thanks to that, Serbia can significantly increase its position in EU policy and at the same time force both Russia and China to pay more attention to and court Serbia.

In addition, Serbia also forced the EU to make clear concessions on the issues of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Serbia, and to speed up and not delay the process of negotiating Serbia's accession to the EU. Wouldn't that kill two birds with one stone for Serbia?
