As a young doctor recently honored as a typical young citizen of Ho Chi Minh City 2024, Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Vinh is gradually asserting himself on the path of science, especially in pharmacy.
Born and raised in Song Cau town (Phu Yen province), the guy has a special passion for the health sector. Currently working at the University of Health Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University), the 2024 Outstanding Young Citizen of Ho Chi Minh City said that his biggest desire is to find solutions to antibiotic resistance and cancer, focusing on Vietnamese patients.
Dr. NGUYEN PHUOC VINH
One heart for health science
Graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, French program in 2017, Phuoc Vinh received an excellent scholarship from the French Embassy in Vietnam and immediately went to France. He studied directly in the second year of the master's program in pharmacy at the University of Paris-Sud and completed the program in August 2018.
At this time, the 1994-born guy was really struggling with the choice of staying or returning. The invitation from a large French pharmaceutical corporation in Vietnam to be a factory manager also made Vinh think a lot, because if he accepted, it would open up a good job opportunity, right in his hometown.
Then he decided to stay, continue his research in Europe and graduate in early 2022. Not only is it a long journey, but also because the world has just gone through the harsh COVID-19 pandemic. So more than ever, Phuoc Vinh deeply misses his homeland in a foreign land and longs to return.
"I had many thoughts and considerations when choosing to return home, like many other international students. The biggest concern is whether I can continue to apply and develop what I have learned when I return home," Vinh shared.
But he decided to return and start looking for opportunities to develop his career with the thought of contributing the knowledge he had accumulated to the country's science. Meeting with Professor Le Minh Tri, who was then the deputy head of the Faculty of Medicine (Ho Chi Minh City National University), Vinh said he was in the mindset of someone looking for a place to work and was quite vague about the future.
"But after only half an hour of talking with him, I was able to orient myself on the path I will take in the next 30 years," Vinh smiled as he recalled the opportunity to choose to work at the University of Health Sciences today.
Finding answers to the problem of drug resistance
The research journey was long, but Vinh said there were two projects that he was most proud of. A PhD thesis in France with the result of a Q1 publication in which Vinh was the main author. This result brought Phuoc Vinh a prestigious award from the French Academy of Pharmacy.
This is the first topic that Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Vinh has taken on the role of head of and has carried out with all his heart, from the idea, research method to human resources, finance, and publication. "I personally carried out everything. It was a wonderful experience for a young person pursuing a scientific path like me," Vinh expressed.
"I am grateful to Ho Chi Minh City National University for trusting me and assigning me this task as soon as I returned to the country. Let's call it a small contribution to my homeland," Vinh said about his second favorite topic. With this topic, he focused on researching solutions to the problem of antifungal drug resistance in Vietnamese cancer patients and initially had positive results.
Every research result or achievement brings Vinh more or less pride and happiness. But for him, the work on antifungal and antibiotic resistance has its own reason.
"This is a contemporary problem that our research may be contributing to solving. The important thing is that the research is conducted on Vietnamese patients and will bring benefits first to Vietnamese people," Vinh shared.
Individuals with many contributions to science and technology
Phuoc Vinh's tireless journey has been rewarded and honored through awards. In 2024, he was honored as a typical young citizen of Ho Chi Minh City and received the Golden Globe award in the field of medical technology. The topic he guided students won second prize at the 22nd Youth Science and Technology Conference in the health sector organized by the Central Youth Union and the Ministry of Health.
Previously, he won first prize at the 21st Youth Science and Technology Conference in the Medical Industry, the 2022 French Academy of Pharmacy's Excellence in Pharmaceutical Preparation Award, and the Outstanding Paper Award at the French Cancer Conference - Western France Cancer Prevention Association...
