At the age of 70, feeling bored, Mr. Ha Van Doan, a farmer in Noong Tai village, Thuong Bang La commune, Van Chan district (Yen Bai province) suddenly had the idea of raising wild chickens. At first, he raised this wild animal as an elegant hobby, but now he sells it as a pet for 1 million VND/bird.

Around mid-2023, Mr. Ha Van Doan started raising wild chickens. At first, he only started with the idea of raising this wild animal for entertainment, as a hobby in old age.

Stemming from the need to raise wild chickens as an elegant hobby, in mid-2023, Mr. Ha Van Doan (Noong Tai village, Thuong Bang La commune, Van Chan district, Yen Bai province) started raising this wild animal. Photo: Ha Thanh

Mr. Doan planned to raise a few roosters so they could crow happily, to ease his sadness when he missed his children and grandchildren.

"But then, a visitor told me to raise more wild chickens. Who knows, maybe many people will want to buy them as pets because this breed of chicken is rare and beautiful now, or simply to buy them for meat because this type of chicken has delicious meat. So I decided to raise more," Mr. Doan confided.

Then, the number of wild chickens he bred increased day by day. One customer after another came to visit. Some bought one chicken as a pet, others bought a pair to eat.

The good news spread far and wide, many people from as far away as Hanoi, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc came to buy but he did not have enough to sell.

He said, "I only plan to raise a few so that when my children and grandchildren come back from far away, they will have something to eat. Because the chickens are raised cleanly and only fed corn and rice, I can rest assured. Buying chickens from the market is often not delicious and I don't know the origin, source, or quality. Then when my grandchildren go away, I give each of them 1 or 2 chickens to take as gifts or to eat. They say they only like to eat chickens raised by their father."

Occasionally, on weekends or holidays, Mr. Doan's children and grandchildren gather together to have a family meal with their grandparents, and that meal cannot lack the wild chicken that he raised.

According to Mr. Doan, Thuong Bang La commune, Van Chan district (Yen Bai province), male jungle fowls have beautiful shapes and feathers, and are loved by many people to buy as pets. Photo: Ha Thanh.

Currently, Mr. Doan has about 20 wild chickens, both male and female. This type of chicken has an average weight of 1 - 1.5 kg. They have red feathers, leaden legs, long sharp spurs, and very attractive white ears. Because of this special feature, many people choose to raise wild chickens as pets.

Although the weight of the hen is not large, the quality of the meat is unquestionable, suitable for making many different dishes such as boiled chicken, grilled chicken, especially chicken stewed with Chinese herbs.

This wild animal is shy by nature but very clever and very difficult to approach.

The natural environment is the best environment for wild chickens to develop, so it is not easy to domesticate and raise this breed of chicken.

Currently, Mr. Doan chooses two forms of captivity and free-range farming. According to Mr. Doan, wild chickens have high resistance, are healthy, and rarely get sick. This type of chicken does not consume much food.

Usually, roosters start crowing when they are about 6 months old. Once they know how to crow, they can mate with hens. Hens start laying eggs when they are about 7 months old.

Hens usually breed in early March, laying up to 3 clutches/year (for chickens raised at home), each clutch lays about 10 eggs and takes 21 days to hatch.

Around the 7th to 10th lunar month, the roosters begin to molt and during this time the hens also stop laying eggs.

Due to the increasing number of customers, Mr. Doan plans to expand to about 100 pigs this year to partly meet market demand.

He sells commercial jungle fowl for 500,000 VND/kg, while some ornamental jungle fowl cost up to 1 million VND/bird, but many people still ask to buy them but have no goods to sell.
