Many students are looking forward to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announcing the third exam subject for grade 10. Many students have already deduced the exam subject themselves to focus on studying well.
Hanoi students nervous before announcement of 3rd exam subject for 10th grade
In just under 4 months, students across the country will take the tough 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year. While many provinces and cities have announced the third exam subject, Hanoi has yet to announce which subject will be "finalized". Many parents and students are "sitting on fire", with many students even narrowing down their exam subjects to study.
Nguyen To Duc Phu, grade 9, Nguyen Truong To Secondary School, Dong Da District, Hanoi expressed: "For me, the fact that the third subject has not been announced makes me feel a bit nervous and impatient. However, what I am worried about is that if I know the third subject is not a subject I am good at, it will be very difficult to review and summarize the knowledge."

However, Duc Phu also said that in class, in addition to the two compulsory subjects of Literature and Math, teachers in other subjects are also quite close to students and test them regularly because it is not clear which subjects they will be tested on.
"When I'm at home, I study all the subjects with a lot of knowledge. However, I still have to complete all the assignments as well as review everything I've learned, so the burden and anxiety is very big for me when I have to worry about more things than a predetermined subject.
If I had to choose a third subject, I would choose English. Apart from the fact that I am very good at this subject, for me, English combines memorization and partly thinking, such as memorizing formulas and eliminating different possibilities to consider the correctness of a sentence.
If it is Natural Sciences, most students will have difficulty taking a combination of 3 subjects with completely different knowledge and formulas, and have to think a lot about how to do it. As for History - Geography, the amount of knowledge to memorize is a lot, and it is difficult to remember everything when entering the exam room with a worried mind," Duc Phu said.
Fortunately, during this stressful period, Duc Phu's family was always there to support him. "My mother is abroad but she still calls me regularly to ask about my studies and guide me. She is also willing to pay for extra classes so that I can supplement my knowledge because the curriculum in class is not enough for me. Everyone in the family is also very close in managing my study progress and also offers attractive rewards to motivate me and compensate for my hard work during the exam preparation process," Duc Phu shared.
Also a candidate taking the 10th grade entrance exam this year and looking forward to the third exam, Tran Nam Khanh, a student at a middle school in Ha Dong, Hanoi, said he has made a plan to eliminate the exam subject to focus on studying best.
Nam Khanh said: "I see many localities announcing the third exam subject is English, so I only focus on reviewing this subject along with the two compulsory subjects of Literature and Math. I think my exclusion plan is completely reasonable because in the past few years, if there were three subjects, Hanoi would only have English. On the other hand, this year is the first year of applying the new program, so the Department of Education and Training will create the most favorable conditions for us. Not only me but my friends also "tell" each other like that. Of course, we still do not neglect, ensuring other subjects to avoid "shock" when hearing the news".
Parents "sitting on hot coals"
Ms. To Hong Phuong, Gia Lam district, Hanoi expressed: "The whole family is worried about my child because this exam is not simple. Not only is the competition high, but I also have to calculate and review each subject and choose my wishes. Just a little deviation and the decision will change direction. I hope this year the exam will be in English and I still tell my child to focus on this subject."
Ms. Le Thu Huyen, Ha Dong district, Hanoi, has only one wish: any subject is fine, but the Hanoi Department of Education and Training should announce it early so that parents, students and schools can be proactive.
Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Principal of Thanh Cong Secondary School, said: "Currently, the school is still teaching the new curriculum while reviewing for students. Teachers of all subjects teach and review for students so that students can grasp the knowledge and avoid neglecting any subject because the Department has not yet announced the third subject. The school is still closely following the teaching plan according to the curriculum framework."
On February 12, a representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that they are urgently researching and drafting a plan to enroll students in the first grades of the 2025-2026 school year, including 10th grade enrollment.
Admission to grade 10 is conducted by examination, including two subjects: Literature and Mathematics; the third exam subject is expected to be announced in February 2025.
A representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that this year's 10th grade entrance exam is the first exam of the 2018 General Education Program. The Department will decide when to announce the third exam subject and when to implement it for the best results.
