The European Union (EU) food and feed safety system has issued a warning against Vietnamese food exports due to violations of EU regulations, leading to product recalls.
The Vietnam SPS Office (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) has just sent an official dispatch to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), along with the Vietnam Beer - Alcohol - Beverage Association, Vietnam Coffee - Cocoa Association, Vietnam Traditional Fish Sauce, and Vietnam Cashew Association about the European Union's warning on export products.
Accordingly, this situation has been going on for a while, forcing the EU to warn and recall violating products.
The four reasons warned by the EU are that businesses have not registered to circulate products containing ingredients from "new foods" in the EU market; businesses declare ingredients in the products that are not consistent with the records, especially ingredients that can easily cause allergies.
In addition, the product contains illegal food additives or exceeds the prescribed level; the enterprise does not declare or conduct veterinary quarantine at the border gate for "mixed products" containing animal ingredients.

Speaking with Dan Viet, Mr. Ngo Xuan Nam, Deputy Director of the Vietnam SPS Office, said that among the EU's warnings, the regulations on "new foods" and "mixed products" are confusing export businesses.
"Enterprises that make mistakes when exporting to demanding markets like the EU are usually small and medium-sized. On the contrary, large enterprises, especially FDI enterprises, all have specialized technical departments that can quickly access information about market changes," Mr. Nam informed.
Accordingly, a “novel food” is any food that was not used for human consumption to a significant extent in the EU before 15 May 1997, as detailed in Regulation (EU) 2015/2283; the list of authorised novel foods is in Regulation (EU) 2018/1023.
Regulation (EU) 2022/2292 dated 06/09/2022 supplements Regulation (EU) 2019/625, for mixed food products containing ingredients of animal origin, the animal ingredients must be on the list of enterprises (approved countries) permitted to export animal products to the EU.
In 2024, Vietnam received 114 warnings from the EU, double that of 2023. To avoid a repeat situation, the Vietnam SPS Office recommends that relevant organizations and individuals carefully study market regulations before exporting to avoid unnecessary risks.
For Vietnamese coffee beans, the EU market accounts for 40% of the export value. According to statistics from the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, among EU countries, the German market in 2024 accounted for 11.6% of the total volume and 10.7% of the total coffee export turnover of the country, reaching 155,703 tons, equivalent to 602.89 million USD; followed by Italy and Spain.
