By fattening crabs before, during and after the Lunar New Year this year, Mr. Ho Van Ven, residing in Tan Phong hamlet, Loi An commune, Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province, has an income of tens of millions of dong, enough to provide his family with a warm Tet.

"This year, I raised crabs on an area of 1,000 square meters. After the recent harvest, after deducting all expenses, I still made a profit of about 100 million VND," Mr. Ven said happily.

According to this farmer, for many years now, he and the people in the area have started applying the model of fattening female crabs until they have enough roe to resell at a high price, in order to earn more income for their families.

Accordingly, female crabs that lack roe, are soft, or have not reached the right weight will be purchased by Mr. Ven and brought back to raise in the pond, fed daily with the food source of catfish available in the shrimp pond.

Female crabs lacking roe or soft roe are purchased by Mr. Ho Van Ven, residing in Tan Phong hamlet, Loi An commune, Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province for around 300,000 VND/kg, but after 1 month of fattening them in a pond, feeding them daily, when the crabs have enough roe, Mr. Ven sells them for around 1 million VND/kg during Tet. "Normally, soft female crabs with little roe... are purchased for around 300,000 VND/kg, but when fattened, they gain roe very quickly in just about 1 month of raising, and when conditions are met, the pond owner sells them for around 1 million VND/kg," said Mr. Ven.

According to Mr. Ven, at first he raised crabs in plastic tanks and oxygenated them, each tank had 50 crabs. After a period of raising them, he found that due to the limited space, the crabs developed slowly and were easily lost. Realizing that the natural environment was suitable, he decided to take advantage of the abandoned shrimp pond to raise crabs. In addition, the pond still had rice snails and beneficial plankton, so the crab farming was very effective.

Similarly, Mr. Trinh Van Den said that his main job is a crab trader in Tran Van Thoi district.

Female crabs lacking roe are released into ponds around the 11th lunar month every year, fed with the food source of catfish available in the shrimp pond. After only about 1 month of release, the crabs have enough roe to help farmers earn a profit of several hundred thousand VND/kg. Photo: Vu Linh

Grasping the market demand, the price of crab with roe will increase before, during and after Tet. Mr. Den also chooses to raise female crabs that lack roe again, and takes care of the crab pit every day to sell at a higher price during this time.

"Every day I collect 40-50 kg of sea crabs, of which I sell about 30 kg, keeping 15-20 kg of female crabs that are not yet qualified to release into the pond to take care of and wait for Tet prices," said Mr. Den. He added that to help the crabs grow well, he buys bait fish to feed the crabs to help them grow quickly and reach the desired weight.

As a crab buyer with many years of experience, Mr. Le Chanh Dang said that the Tet crab harvest is the harvest he looks forward to the most. "During the time I go to buy crabs, I meet some people who sell female crabs, newly molted and still soft, healthy crabs, I buy them, put them back in the tank, feed them for about 10 days or half a month, the crabs will have roe, and sell them for a high price," Mr. Dang said.
