The price of clean vegetables increased during Tet, helping Binh Dinh vegetable growers earn high incomes and recover from previous failures caused by prolonged rains that damaged vegetables.

Farmers grow clean vegetables

According to Thuan Nghia Agricultural Cooperative, Phu Phong town (Tay Son district, Binh Dinh), during the annual Tet vegetable crop, the cooperative produces about 19.5 hectares of leafy vegetables, herbs, cauliflower, cucumber, bitter melon, green beans and onions to serve the market.

This year, the rain was late and lasted throughout December 2024, causing many farmers in Thuan Nghia to lose their vegetable crop for Tet, and many households were unable to recover production in time to have vegetables to sell during Tet.

Until the 10th of December, there was still vacant land in Thuan Nghia vegetable area, where vegetables had not been planted. Only in high ground areas with good drainage did people plant vegetables to have vegetables to sell for Tet.

Farmer Nguyen Dung, a vegetable grower in Thuan Nghia, said that usually around the beginning of the 11th lunar month, people in Thuan Nghia start preparing the land and adding manure to plant vegetables for Tet.

This year the weather was unfavorable, with rain lasting almost a month, so vegetable growers here did not dare to "get started". At the beginning of December, the sun was just starting to shine, and Mr. Dung and his wife took their hoes out to prepare the land to plant green cabbage and lettuce, hoping to have vegetables in time to sell for Tet.

When the vegetable crop comes, growers cannot plant seeds because of heavy rain, causing slow consumption of vegetable seeds.

Farmer Quach Luu, owner of Quach Luu nursery (belonging to Thuan Nghia Agricultural Cooperative) said that according to the demand of orders, in early October of the lunar calendar, Quach Luu nursery has grown more than 15,000 chili plants, 7,000 eggplant, cabbage, lettuce, squash and nearly 50,000 cauliflower plants to supply farmers for production.

"However, the rain continued for a long time, and most of the plants that were brought to the fields were damaged; the remaining plants could not be brought to the fields and had to be abandoned because they were too old. My family alone had to destroy all of the more than 2,000 cauliflower plants that were blooming and rotting to replant coriander," said Mr. Quach Luu.

Mr. Quach Van Cau - Director of Thuan Nghia Agricultural Cooperative, Phu Phong town (Tay Son district, Binh Dinh) said that, facing the risk of vegetable shortage for the Lunar New Year 2025, for areas that are completely damaged, the Cooperative guides people to destroy and replant short-term vegetables. For areas with little damage, people should repair and take care of them to harvest in time to supply the market during Tet.

"Vegetables are the main source of income for 224 households who are members of Thuan Nghia Agricultural Cooperative. Income from vegetables before Tet is the condition for households to have a full or lacking Tet," said Mr. Quach Van Cau.

Tet vegetable prices unexpectedly increase

Recently, the weather in Binh Dinh has been sunny, so the previously damaged leafy vegetable areas have recovered quickly, in time to sell for Tet.

In particular, some cucumber areas that farmers proactively planted early to sell before Tet have now recovered in time to sell during Tet; while cucumber areas that farmers proactively planted late to harvest during the 3 Tet meals are now about 2-3 days late for Tet.

According to the Director of Thuan Nghia Agricultural Cooperative, the recent prolonged rains have damaged fruits such as cauliflower, bitter melon, cucumber, green beans, etc., causing slow growth and reduced productivity. Thuan Nghia vegetable village has about 5 hectares of vegetables of all kinds in time to supply consumers during the Lunar New Year 2025.

According to Mr. Cau, currently, Thuan Nghia Agricultural Cooperative buys from the people about 700-800kg of various vegetables every day for preliminary processing and supplying to clean vegetable selling establishments. Traders from other places gather in Thuan Nghia to buy about 4-5 tons of various vegetables to supply to markets in and outside the province.

"Vegetable prices are high. For example, Malabar spinach is currently priced at 15,000 VND/kg, previously it was only 7,000-10,000 VND/kg; Malabar spinach is currently priced at 15,000-17,000 VND/kg, previously it was only 7,000-8,000 VND/kg; cucumbers sold at the garden are priced at 15,000 VND/kg, previously it was only 10,000 VND/kg; bitter melon has increased the most, previously it was only 30,000 VND/kg, now it is 50,000-60,000 VND/kg. The reason for the price increase is because supply is just enough to meet demand, unlike previous years when supply exceeded demand," said Mr. Cau.

Thanks to the high prices of all kinds of vegetables, although vegetable growers in Thuan Nghia suffered losses during the last rainy season, they are now able to sell at high prices, so their income is still stable and everyone is happy.

According to Mr. Cau, this year, vegetable growers in Thuan Nghia have a good income.

The first stage is the beginning of the rainy season, in October-November of the solar calendar (September-October of the lunar calendar), thanks to favorable weather and little rain, the vegetable growing area increased.

All kinds of vegetables at that time grew very well, with high productivity. At that time, besides Da Nang, Quang Ngai, floods occurred, so all the vegetables harvested in Thuan Nghia were consumed by the market there. A sao of leafy vegetables grown in the cold season lasted up to 1 month.

"During this Tet holiday, people made a profit of 4-5 million; and vegetables and fruits take up to 60 days to harvest, giving a profit of over 10 million/sao. I thought it would be a failure, but unexpectedly this year vegetable growers had a warm Tet," said Mr. Cau.
