The two daughters of Ms. Vy Thi Thuong ( name changed upon request ), a primary school teacher in a mountainous district of a province in the North Central region, were both valedictorians in the high school graduation exam in previous years.
One student has a record score in high school, one is the valedictorian of the province. One of them followed in his mother's footsteps and became a teacher.

Living in a difficult area, students still face many obstacles in going to school, many children have to drop out of school, but Ms. Thuong's children all achieve good academic results.
When sharing about her children's academic achievements, Ms. Thuong affirmed that her children have more opportunities to study than their friends thanks to her mother being a teacher. Not only in terms of material conditions but also in terms of support, building a learning environment, and creating motivation for the children.
Ms. Thuong said that teachers' salaries may be low, but compared to many other professions, teaching helps her family have the conditions to raise their children at a basic level of education. Her husband works in the fields and in the forest mainly to earn extra money for rice and daily meals.
However, for many families who work other jobs, it is difficult for them to afford their children's education, so children have to drop out of school early to work to earn money to help the family.
"In general, I have not seen any teacher's children drop out of school because they cannot afford tuition. If there are any, they are from difficult circumstances or illnesses," Ms. Thuong said frankly.
According to Ms. Thuong, teachers' children have better conditions and opportunities to study than children whose parents work in other professions, not only in terms of money.
As a teacher, my child has access to books from an early age. I can also tutor and support my child in his studies, create a learning environment in the family, and support career orientation...
"In nearly 30 years of working in this profession, I have never complained about the unfairness of teaching. The job I choose must be cherished and I must be responsible for it. This profession brings values to children and family that not all professions have," said Ms. Thuong.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hau, a retired teacher in Nghe An, shared that when she was teaching, in the general context of society, the teaching profession was still difficult, having to earn a living from meal to meal, and raising children to go to school was very hard.
But, she looked around her, the children of her generation of colleagues were all well-educated, had stable jobs, and had a better educational foundation than the local average.
Ms. Hau believes that it is not only a financial issue, but more importantly, when parents pursue a career in teaching, they have the conditions to build a foundation for their children's education and guide their children's path better than many parents who do other jobs.
Ms. Hau said that when her eldest daughter was in elementary school, her name was on the list of 3 students in her class who received 5 notebooks. This support was very valuable to everyone as well as her family.
However, after talking and considering, the mother and daughter decided to send this support to another student in the class whose father had passed away and whose mother was a single parent working as a hired hand to raise three children.
"After only finishing 5th grade, this student dropped out of school to stay home and help his mother. His two younger siblings also only finished 9th grade and then dropped out. My family was poor at that time, but compared to many families, all 3 of my children went to university.
"The teaching profession gives me many opportunities to raise my children, not only financially but also in terms of their educational orientation, compared to my contemporaries," said Ms. Hau.
Ms. Hau is heartened by the proposal to exempt teachers’ children from tuition fees that is being discussed. This shows that management agencies are increasingly interested in the lives of teachers, aiming to help them feel secure and more committed to their work.
However, according to Ms. Hau, if support is provided through tuition exemption, attention should be paid to students with special circumstances who have difficulty accessing education and are at higher risk of dropping out of school than teachers' children.
"I think it would be very difficult for a teacher to accept the "favor" of exempting their child from tuition fees when some of their students are in difficult circumstances and are at risk of dropping out of school," she said.

According to Ms. Hau, caring about teachers' lives and attracting talented people into pedagogy requires specific policies, focusing on the teachers themselves.
It could be reforming salary policies, improving working conditions for teachers, reducing administrative procedures, increasing professional development activities, giving them freedom and creativity to develop their personal capacity...
