According to the South China Morning Post on February 6, a rare incident occurred in Shanghai, China when a teenage girl (13-19 years old) stole jewelry worth about 1 million yuan (140,000 USD) from her mother but sold it for only 60 yuan (8 USD) to buy lip rings and earrings.

This incident quickly attracted great public attention and sparked controversy about child rearing.

Stealing billions worth of jewelry to sell to buy cheap earrings

The incident occurred when Ms. Wang, who lives in Shanghai, discovered that her valuable jewelry was missing. After checking, she discovered that her daughter, surnamed Li, had sold them at a low price.

Worried and angry, she decided to report the incident to the Wanli Police Station of the Putuo Public Security Bureau for help.

Investigation showed that the daughter, who was believed to be in her "rebellious teenage years", stole jewelry from home and sold it to get some pocket money.

When questioned, Li said she was unaware of the true value of the jewelry. She mistakenly thought it was fake and decided to sell it at a jade stall in the local market for pocket money.

The amount received was 60 yuan (8 USD), just enough to buy a 30 yuan lip ring and a pair of 30 yuan earrings.

“She said she saw other people wearing lip rings and they looked beautiful, so she wanted one too. When I asked how much it cost, she said it was only 60 yuan,” Ms. Wang told police.

As soon as they received the report, the police quickly began investigating. They checked security cameras, searched the market, and coordinated with the management to track down where the jewelry was sold.

"The owner of the jade shop was not present that day, but we contacted them by phone and asked them to come to the police station to cooperate with the investigation," said Fan Gaojie, one of the officers in charge of the case.

After verification, the missing jewelry was found and returned to Ms. Wang. Fortunately, the items were still intact, not disposed of or remade.

Controversy over parenting

As soon as the story was reported by Shanghai media, the incident quickly became a hot topic on social media and attracted many mixed opinions from the online community.

Some people believe that the main responsibility lies with parents for not giving their children enough pocket money. “If the family has millions of yuan in jewelry, why not give the child some pocket money?” one person commented.

“A teenage girl selling her jewelry to get 60 yuan to buy a lip ring is something parents should think about. With such economic conditions, why not give her money?” another user agreed.

However, many people sided with the parents and spoke out against this view. A university student criticized: “Giving money to a minor to buy a lip piercing? Even I, a university student, would not think of that.”

Another person emphasized: “Whether it is puberty or not, stealing family property is still wrong. This is a mistake in the way children are educated, it cannot be blamed on teenage rebellion.”
