Chinese President holds talks with Thai Prime Minister, hails 'golden years' of friendship

On February 6, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in Beijing, as the two countries celebrate 50 years of bilateral relations in 2025.

Ms. Paetongtarn is on an official visit to China from February 5-8, her first visit to Beijing since taking office as Thai Prime Minister in August last year.

According to The Nation (Thailand), speaking at the meeting, President Xi Jinping reaffirmed that China considers Thailand a priority in developing relations with neighboring countries.

He expressed support for Thailand's development, the Southeast Asian nation's new government, and Bangkok's growing role in the region and internationally.

Describing 2025, which marks the 50th anniversary of Thailand-China bilateral relations, as the “golden year of friendship”, President Xi Jinping stressed that the main themes of this milestone are cooperation and development, focusing on achieving concrete results that benefit both countries and the wider region.

Meanwhile, China's Xinhua news agency reported that Mr. Xi Jinping appreciated Thailand's efforts and effective measures in fighting online gambling and telecommunications fraud.

According to him, the two sides should continue to strengthen law enforcement, security and judicial cooperation to protect people's lives and property, while maintaining smooth exchanges and cooperation among countries in the region.

For his part, Prime Minister Paetongtarn said Thailand is willing to strengthen law enforcement cooperation with China and other neighboring countries, and take resolute and effective measures to crack down on cross-border crimes including online gambling and telecommunications fraud .

Emphasizing that China remains Thailand’s important economic partner, ranked as the Southeast Asian nation’s top trading partner for 12 consecutive years and one of the top investors in Thailand, with investments exceeding US$100 billion, Ms. Paetongtarn called for continuous cooperation between the two sides to maintain this special relationship for future generations.

Ms Paetongtarn said Thailand and China will sign at least 14 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) between the two countries in various fields during her visit, including a joint intention to complete the high-speed railway project being implemented by Beijing and Bangkok, connecting to the high-speed railway system in Laos.
