Iran, Jordan, Malaysia and China have reacted to US President Donald Trump's plan to take over the Gaza Strip, while Israel has taken military action.

Iran's Foreign Ministry on February 4 rejected what it called a "shocking" plan put forward by US President Donald Trump to control the Gaza Strip and "forcefully relocate" Palestinians from this coastal territory, according to AFP.

"The plan to clear Gaza and force Palestinians to relocate to neighboring countries is considered a continuation of the Zionist regime's targeted plan to completely destroy the Palestinian nation, and is strongly rejected and condemned," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stressed.

Mr Baqaei described Mr Trump's plan as "an unprecedented attack on the fundamental principles and foundations of international law and the UN Charter". He went on to call on the international community to recognise "the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and their liberation from... occupation and apartheid".

President Trump announced on February 4 that "the United States will take over" and "own" the Gaza Strip. This plan of Mr. Trump has caused outrage from Arab governments and some world leaders, according to AFP.

Jordan’s King Abdullah announced on February 5 that he had rejected any efforts to annex land and relocate Palestinians. The role, presence and future of Palestinians in Jordan is one of the country’s most sensitive political issues. The Jordanian government does not release data on how many of its 8 million citizens are of Palestinian origin, although a recent US Congressional report estimated the figure at more than half, according to Reuters.

Jordan has long been one of the largest recipients of US foreign aid in the Middle East, and this support plays a vital role in the country's economic stability and security.

Reaction of Malaysia, China

In addition, Malaysia's Foreign Ministry announced today that the country "strongly opposes" any plans to forcibly resettle Palestinians from Gaza. "Such inhumane acts constitute ethnic cleansing and are in clear violation of international law and multiple United Nations resolutions," the Malaysian Foreign Ministry stressed.

"Any attempt, whether direct or indirect, to unilaterally and coercively impose solutions that disregard the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and violate their freedoms is unacceptable, unjustifiable and will only exacerbate one of the longest conflicts in the region," the Malaysian Foreign Ministry warned.

Malaysia, a Muslim-majority country, has no diplomatic relations with Israel and many people in the Southeast Asian nation support the Palestinians.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had earlier spoken out against Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza after Hamas militants launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Anwar said Malaysia maintains good relations with Hamas' political wing but has no links with its military wing. The Malaysian government has delivered $10.19 million in humanitarian aid and donations to Palestinians in Gaza since the Hamas-Israel conflict broke out in October 2023.

Also today, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Beijing opposes the forced displacement of people in Gaza. "Gaza is the Gaza of the Palestinians, not a political bargaining chip, and certainly not a target of the law of the jungle," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a regular press conference. Guo also emphasized that China firmly supports the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people, according to Reuters.

Israel takes military action

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz today ordered the military to prepare a plan to allow "voluntary departure" from Gaza, according to Reuters citing information from Israel's Channel 12.

Mr Katz's plan would include options for evacuating people from Gaza by land as well as special arrangements for leaving by sea and air, according to Channel 12.

"I welcome President Trump's bold plan, the people of Gaza should be free to leave and emigrate, as is the practice around the world," Channel 12 quoted Minister Katz as saying.

Asked who should take in the Palestinians, Mr. Katz said it should be countries that oppose Israel's military operations in Gaza.

“Countries like Spain, Ireland, Norway and others, which have made false accusations and claims against Israel regarding its actions in Gaza, are legally obliged to allow all Gaza residents into their territory,” Mr. Katz said.
