Speaking privately with Tuoi Tre, Ms. Vu Thi Hoai - owner of the vermicelli soup shop at 54 Bach Mai Street - admitted to making a mistake, accidentally letting customers misunderstand that 3 bowls of vermicelli soup cost 1.2 million VND, but affirmed that she did not intend to "rip off" customers.
One day after being temporarily suspended, the vermicelli shop at 54 Bach Mai Street (Bach Khoa Ward, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi) closed. It was noted that there was no signboard or street-front store at this address, but rather a vermicelli shop located in a house in a small alley at 54 Bach Mai.
On the afternoon of February 1, the restaurant owner, Ms. Vu Thi Hoai, shared with Tuoi Tre Online about the incident that occurred on January 30, related to a customer accusing the restaurant of selling 3 bowls of noodles for up to 1.2 million VND (equivalent to 400,000 VND/bowl).
"It's an unfortunate misunderstanding, a valuable lesson"
According to Ms. Hoai, the incident took place on the night of January 30 (ie the night of the first day, early morning of the second day of Tet) which was also the first day of opening of this shop in the new year. The shop's special feature is that it only sells from 11pm to 2am, and is sold at a private house in a deep alley with a large number of customers, even though the shop does not have a sign or a "street-front house".
"Because there were only my family and a long-time waiter who did the work of parking, cleaning tables, collecting money, serving customers... so when my husband "joked" that the customer paid 400,000 VND/bowl, he didn't really check the account when the customer transferred the money.
When the customer posted the post, my sister in the family did not fully understand the situation so she also said some tense things. After that, my sister called to ask again and I checked again and found that the money was in my wallet. My family posted an apology and wanted to meet the customer again to refund the money" - Ms. Hoai confided.
According to this restaurant owner, her husband - the restaurant owner - often jokes with customers that 40,000 VND is 400,000 VND; 50,000 VND is 500,000 VND.
The restaurant has been in the traditional vermicelli soup business for 30 years, without a sign outside, with a stable number of regular customers and late-night diners. Daily consumption is from 60 - 80kg of vermicelli.
The store also posted prices with a full and clear price list, so Ms. Hoai did not think that this matter had been pushed too far.
Yesterday, January 31, the family of the vermicelli shop owner worked with the authorities and reported the entire incident.
Not knowing who the customer was, the owner of the restaurant posted a request to contact and meet the customer to refund the money in a social network forum group. At the same time, Ms. Hoai said she had also contacted the bank for support but has not yet received a response.
Hope to see you again and refund you
Therefore, Ms. Hoai said that for now, she will strictly follow the instructions of the authorities to temporarily suspend the restaurant's operations. However, the restaurant owner hopes to meet the customer soon to explain more clearly, avoid misunderstandings and resolve the story, and return the money to the customer.
Ms. Hoai also explained that the shop has been in business for 30 years, has no bad reputation and does not have the mindset of doing business opportunistically during Tet.
"It is a costly lesson in business to joke and misunderstand customers, and it is wrong to not check the money customers transfer, so that such an incident happens. We are really sad and we have to accept whatever people say.
But we hope everyone will share, because the restaurant has been in business for 30 years, and does not have the mindset of overcharging or taking advantage of customers to pay 400,000 VND/bowl of noodles to trade off the traditional profession of 30 years" - Ms. Hoai shared.
Sharing about the incident, some people around also confirmed that this vermicelli soup restaurant has been operating for many years. Although it is a small restaurant in a deep alley, without a sign, it is very popular because it has a stable number of regular customers.
The restaurant is also recommended online, so many customers come to eat at night. However, Mr. Tuan - a neighbor - said that the owner of this restaurant often teases customers, so the above incident is a lesson for restaurant owners when there are unfortunate misunderstandings.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre on the afternoon of February 1, Ms. Hoang Thi Tuyet Lan, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Bach Khoa Ward (Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi), said that the incident is currently being assigned to the ward police to verify and clarify.
Through initial work, Ms. Lan assessed that the owner of this restaurant was very willing to cooperate in providing information to the authorities. When realizing the incident, he proactively apologized to the customer and wanted to refund the money.
However, the customer has not yet been contacted. Therefore, to ensure objectivity in the case and complete information from both the seller and the customer, the ward has requested a temporary suspension of operations until the case is clarified and when there is a final conclusion, the ward will publicly inform the entire incident.
