Campaigning before the US primary election

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên19/06/2023

CNN reported on June 18 that US President Joe Biden began his re-election campaign with a large rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He and many other politicians are running for the party's nomination to run for US President in 2024. The campaigns also reflect the policies of each candidate before the primary election, scheduled to take place from February to June 2024.

Biden's efforts

Speaking to about 2,000 union members at the rally (held on June 17 local time), President Biden reiterated that he had pledged to support the people during his campaign and had fulfilled his pledge, while the people had also supported him. Last week, the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), a group of 60 unions representing more than 12.5 million workers, endorsed President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the earliest the AFL-CIO had endorsed a US presidential election, and held a rally on June 17.

President Biden campaigned in Pennsylvania on June 17.

During the rally, President Biden mentioned the current administration's $1.2 trillion infrastructure package, which was passed by Congress with bipartisan support.

"In 10 years, Americans will look around and say, look at what we've done. Look at our roads, our bridges, our airports," he said. President Biden added that there are about 32,000 infrastructure projects underway across the country. In the 2020 US presidential election, union voters helped Mr. Biden win key battleground states including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Competition in the Republican Party

In his speech, President Biden only briefly mentioned his predecessor, Donald Trump, the leading candidate for the Republican nomination. Accordingly, the White House owner said that he had much better infrastructure policies, while not mentioning Mr. Trump's prosecution. Appearing in court in Florida on June 13, Mr. Trump denied all 37 charges related to illegally retaining classified government documents after leaving office and conspiring to obstruct a federal investigation.

Mr. Trump speaks in Bedminster town (New Jersey state) on June 13.

After leaving court, the former president headed to his club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and raised $2 million at a dinner with top donors. His campaign said it had raised $7 million since his indictment.

"They're going to lose, and we're going to win bigger and better than ever before," The Week magazine quoted Mr. Trump as saying to supporters in Bedminster. Observers believe that Republicans are not only using the impeachment of Mr. Trump to gain support at this time but also to attract them to vote for him in the future, according to AP.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party has another potential candidate, Mr. Ron DeSantis - Governor of Florida. According to The New York Times , at a fundraising event in Nevada on June 17, Mr. DeSantis avoided mentioning Mr. Trump, but clearly aimed at the former president. Mr. DeSantis said that last year's midterm elections were another link in a chain of failures and had "developed a culture of losing" in the Republican Party, while praising his landslide victory when running for governor in November 2022.

Other potential candidates

According to AP, although the US presidential election is still about a year and a half away, the country's political scene has identified many potential faces. The most prominent in the Republican Party are Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis, while Mr. Biden faces some competition in the Democratic Party but not too prominent.

On the Republican side, candidates running for election include former Vice President Mike Pence, Senator Tim Scott, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, Indian-American businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, talk show host Larry Elder and Miami (Florida) Mayor Francis Suarez.

On the Democratic side, there are also attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy, and author, lecturer and activist Marianne Williamson.
