Wings for difficult circumstances

The Rainbow Classroom Project was established out of love and hope to help unfortunate children with autism, developmental delays, and difficult circumstances.

Hard…

Rainbow Class is a non-profit project founded by Tran Quy Ha, a former American student. During her time as an American student, Quy Ha had to go through many difficulties in a foreign land. Therefore, when she returned to Vietnam, realizing the importance of letters, in 2016, Ms. Ha founded the Rainbow Class group with the hope of bringing letters to difficult circumstances across the country. After 7 years of operation, Rainbow Class is currently a member of the National Volunteer Network in the Northern region, under the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.

Phuc Xa Classroom is one of the learning points established from the first days of the project.

The project started with an English class for people with disabilities in the Vietnam Spinal Injury Club (EVSIC). Students with disabilities study online in groups, according to time frames, and each volunteer teaches 3-4 students. Realizing the effectiveness of this learning model, Quy Ha and other volunteers continuously opened more English, Math, and Vietnamese classes for primary school children in difficult circumstances. The most typical are some classes such as Phuc Xa class for poor children in the Long Bien market area and the Red River buoy village, or the healing class combined with the project "Breaking the cycle - Education for children is an effective way out of poverty for families affected by Covid-19" in Hanoi and some other provinces and cities.

Among the classes that have been put into operation, the class at Si Ma Cai in Lao Cai is probably the most special. This is the project's most remote learning location for ethnic minority children who cannot go to school. "The Si Ma Cai class is what I am most proud of during the time the project was operating. Because establishing a learning location in the highlands is not easy, from finding volunteers to facilities," Quy Ha shared. Not only helping with teaching knowledge, Tran Quy Ha and the Rainbow Class also called on benefactors to support the children so that they can have more food and provisions to help ease their lives.

Si Ma Cai class was established with the desire to bring letters to ethnic minority children in Lao Cai.

…but not discouraged

As a volunteer project, it is not surprising that the project's facilities are somewhat simple. However, we must actually visit and observe the project's classrooms to fully appreciate the difficulties and shortages of this project. Visiting Phuc Xa classroom, this is a small room of about 20 square meters, with a dozen sets of tables and chairs for both volunteers and students. The students in a class are not all the same age, there are both adults and children. However, they all share a difficult situation and a spirit of progress and love of learning.

The classroom space is cramped but it is a place to nurture children's dreams.

Every Sunday afternoon, without anyone telling them, the students of Phuc Xa class come together to class. Here, all the teachers are volunteers, not majoring in pedagogy, but they all share the same enthusiasm and desire to spread good things to the community.

As a long-time volunteer with Phuc Xa class, Ms. Nguyen Hau shared: “Most of the volunteers are not teachers but are very persistent. With all the students, they are patient, trying to inspire their love of learning and desire to gain knowledge.”

When difficulties arise in teaching, the young volunteers of the project encourage each other to try harder. “There are times when I want to give up the project to find more stable jobs. But remembering the bright eyes and eager faces of the children, the joy of the adults when they come to class, I try even harder,” Ms. Hau could not hide her emotion.

Despite the difficulties, after nearly 7 years on the journey of bringing letters to hundreds of disadvantaged children, Rainbow Class has continued to develop and expand. It can be seen that volunteering is not only about giving but also a way for us to learn many things. Deciding to participate and stick with the project, each volunteer brings with them the fire of youth, the enthusiasm to give and not asking for anything in return.
