Ha Tinh boy wins 5 full PhD scholarships in the US

Phan Viet Hoang (Nghi Xuan - Ha Tinh) - a former student of Computer Science, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has won 5 full PhD scholarships in the US.

Many impressive achievements

Born and raised in Co Dam, Nghi Xuan district, his father was a soldier and his mother was a teacher. Since childhood, Phan Viet Hoang (born in 2000) was exceptionally intelligent and agile.

When he was in middle school, Hoang took the entrance exam to Dang Thai Mai Secondary School (Vinh City - Nghe An) and was the top student in Math at the school. In high school, he studied at Vinh University High School for the Gifted.

Phan Viet Hoang graduated from Hanoi University of Science and Technology with honors.

During his 12 years of high school, Hoang was always an excellent student. Hoang's small study corner is filled with certificates and medals from participating in competitions from school level, provincial level to national level such as: third prize in the 38th International Mathematics Competition between cities in Hanoi, Silver Medal at the High School Mathematics Olympiad organized by the Vietnam Mathematical Association (school year 2016 - 2017); Gold Medal at the High School Mathematics Olympiad in the North Central region, Second prize in Mathematics at the National High School Excellent Student Competition (school year 2017 - 2018); received scholarships granted by the Ministry of Education and Training in the national key program for Mathematics development in the period 2010 - 2020 and Odon VaLLet scholarships for 2 consecutive school years (2016 - 2017 and 2017 - 2018).

With a passion for science and computers, Hoang always had the determination to study well to have the opportunity to study at top universities in this field.

“Learning about technology and computer science is quite interesting and at the same time, I realized the great potential of this industry in the future, so I chose to take the entrance exam for the Computer Science major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (now Hanoi University of Science and Technology)” - Phan Viet Hoang shared.

During his student years, Hoang always made constant efforts and sought out the most effective learning methods. In September 2022, Hoang graduated with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Technology with honors.

In Hoang's small study corner, certificates and medals are hung everywhere.

Sharing about his learning method, Hoang revealed: “During my studies, I always arrange a reasonable schedule between studying and playing. In class, I focus on listening to the teachers' lectures, avoiding being distracted by other things so that I can absorb knowledge. In my studies, I always set clear goals for myself and focus on achieving short-term and long-term goals. Besides, I also actively study and exchange with friends and seniors so that I can have more ways of looking at problems and grasp knowledge better.”

Realize your dream of studying abroad

Entering his second year of college, Hoang nurtured his dream of studying abroad in the US. From there, Hoang began applying and participating in the VinAI Residency program of VinGroup Corporation. Here, Hoang worked and researched with professors from major universities around the world and had the opportunity to publish scientific research works at major conferences.

Motivated by teachers, family and friends to pursue his dream of studying abroad, Hoang was determined to prepare everything more carefully.

“To study abroad, improving English skills is essential, so I always take the initiative to study and improve my foreign language through the IELTS program. Luckily, during my study and work at the VinAI Residency program, I was able to improve my English more,” Hoang shared.

After graduating, by December 2022, Hoang had prepared his application and submitted it to 13 universities in the US with procedures such as resume, transcript, recommendation letter, essay and interview.

In February 2023, Hoang's emotions exploded when he officially received full doctoral scholarships from New York University, University of Maryland, Purdue University, Rutgers University, and University of Rochester.

“I was very happy to receive the notification emails from the schools. These are all top universities in the US. After so much effort, my dream has finally come true” - Phan Viet Hoang shared.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Phan Viet Hoang's mother, confided: "The achievements are the result of Hoang's tireless efforts. The family never forces him to study, but only reminds and trains him to be self-disciplined and self-aware. In studying, the family always encourages him to try hard and confidently do his best."

With the desire to learn and continue to study the knowledge he has learned during his university studies as well as have the opportunity to work with leading professors in the field of computers, Viet Hoang chose to major in Data Science at New York University. Hoang will receive a full scholarship and a living allowance of nearly 40,000 USD/school year.

On August 18, Hoang will leave to start a new learning environment in the US and promises himself to try his best to study well to continue his dream.
