Joining the Army is a dream

Le Duc Chinh was born into a poor farming family in Vu Trung commune, Kien Xuong district, Thai Binh province. Chinh's childhood was like that of many other children in the countryside. His parents tried hard to give their children a full education. However, poverty still haunted them. After finishing high school, he received an admission notice from the University of Electricity, but Chinh's older brother had to drop out of school to work because the family did not have enough money to pay for his education.

That had a big impact on Chinh's thinking about studying in the future. He took advantage of every possible opportunity to not let down his parents and older brother. With his intelligent and studious nature, Le Duc Chinh was an excellent student during his high school years and won third prize in Physics at the provincial level. In September 2021, he was admitted to the Information Officer School with a fairly high score when he turned 18. His parents were very happy that their son was studying in the Army, but they were also worried because his physical strength was weaker than that of his peers. However, the family also encouraged and believed in Chinh's efforts and training.

Le Duc Chinh confided: “Joining the Army is my dream and also to reduce the economic burden on my family. I also know that the military environment will have special activities, training people comprehensively in both mind and body, requiring each individual to have good health, so I have to try very hard.”

Right from the first days of entering the army, Le Duc Chinh and his teammates had to go through a learning environment with high training intensity, sometimes in the classroom, sometimes on the training ground, along with patrolling, guarding, working, increasing production... Along with that, during the Covid-19 epidemic, the unit was focusing on preventing and fighting the epidemic. For Le Duc Chinh, those difficulties were opportunities to hone and train himself, striving to complete the assigned tasks well.

To have more time to study, Chinh often took advantage of studying at night, while concentrating on listening to lectures to absorb knowledge. From the first subjects, Le Duc Chinh affirmed himself with high scores, was an active and enthusiastic student, often participated in constructive comments, created a lively learning atmosphere in class and often cared about guiding extracurricular activities with teammates, contributing to improving the learning quality of the unit.

Thanks to his good, proactive and positive learning methods, Chinh has been an excellent student for all 3 years of study, leading the entire course. In addition to studying, Chinh is also an example of passion and creativity in scientific research. In May 2023, Le Duc Chinh participated in the Science and Technology Innovation Contest organized by the Information Officer School and won second prize with the product "Smart glasses for the visually impaired".

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen The Hung, Political Commissar of Battalion 28, commented: "Comrade Le Duc Chinh is an exemplary student, excellent in all aspects of studying, training and the unit's movement activities. He is always proactive, proactive, has a progressive spirit, strives to rise up, and is a shining example for students in the unit to follow."

Efforts to overcome difficulties

Meeting Sergeant Le Duc Chinh at the 2019-2024 Emulation Congress of the Information Officer School, he excitedly shared with me about the achievements he has made in the past time.

- What chance brought you to Mathematics and brought you to win so many high prizes? - I asked Le Duc Chinh.

- Since childhood, I liked studying Physics and Math, but I liked Physics more. As for participating in the Mathematical Olympiad, in the first year of school, thanks to the discovery and encouragement of the Platoon Leader who was directly in charge, who was also a former member of the school's Mathematical Olympiad team, I was guided.

What is admirable is that Chinh has always shown the spirit of overcoming difficulties and adversity to achieve achievements. While studying for the 2022 Mathematical Olympiad, he was infected with Covid-19. Partly because he followed the quarantine regulations to avoid spreading the disease to the whole team, partly because his health was affected, Chinh had to stop studying to go for treatment. That made Chinh very sad, but not discouraged.

Le Duc Chinh said: “During the quarantine treatment at the infirmary, I took the opportunity to review more knowledge to keep up with the training standards of the team. Fortunately, I received the attention and care of the medical team, the infirmary doctors and the help of the teachers-coaches, and teammates who guided me through online review via Zoom. I recovered from Covid-19 and continued to participate in the team's review.”

With such outstanding efforts, in the 2022 National Math Olympiad for Students and Pupils, Chinh and the Information Officer School team won 8 awards. Of which, Le Duc Chinh excellently won first prize and was awarded a gold medal in algebra. Not stopping there, in 2023, there were two National Math and Physics Olympiads for Students and Pupils held together, Chinh boldly registered for both subjects and was the only student of the Information Officer School to register for both competitions.

To be able to balance the learning content, Chinh takes advantage of every time to review with teammates.

- When investing a lot in Mathematics and Physics, will you be distracted from specialized military knowledge in information technology? - I asked Le Duc Chinh worriedly.

- I think investing in studying Math and Physics will further strengthen my military knowledge, because that will help me have a foundation and more logical thinking to apply to studying basic and specialized subjects. The proof is that I find other subjects much easier to study. - Chinh answered confidently.

The results were rewarded, at the 2023 National Mathematics Olympiad for Students and Pupils, Le Duc Chinh won third prize in the algebra competition. At the 2023 National Physics Olympiad for Students, Chinh won third prize in the multiple-choice competition and an encouragement prize in the exercise solving competition. And most recently, at the 30th National Mathematics Olympiad for Students and Pupils in Da Nang in April 2024, Chinh continued to win first prize in algebra for the second time, bringing home a gold medal, enriching the school's achievements and bringing honor and pride to himself and his family.

Having spent a lot of time with Chinh and guiding him through his studies, Lieutenant Colonel Le Vo Dai, Head of the Mathematics-Physics Department, Basic Faculty, Information Officer School, expressed his joy: “Le Duc Chinh has demonstrated his aptitude, ability and scientific and effective learning methods. But above all, his efforts and outstanding attempts to overcome the most difficult conditions and complete his assigned tasks are very valuable qualities that I see in my student.”

The 2023-2024 school year was about to end when Le Duc Chinh received the bad news that his father had passed away after a long illness. Chinh expressed: “My father's greatest wish when he was alive was for me to study well so that I could serve in the Army for a long time. I will try my best not to disappoint my father. I will put my best effort into my studies and hope to become a lecturer so that I can impart knowledge to future generations of students.”

With his outstanding achievements in studying and training, Le Duc Chinh was awarded a certificate of merit by the Minister of National Defense for winning first prize in military and national competitions and sports; the Chief of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army awarded a certificate of merit for "Outstanding Youth Union Member"; the Vietnam Mathematical Association and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association awarded certificates of merit; along with the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level and many other awards from the school in peak and sudden emulation periods.
