The Hue Monuments Conservation Center said that the restoration of Thai Hoa Palace is nearing completion after three years of effort. The inauguration ceremony is expected to take place on November 23, on the occasion of Vietnam Heritage Day. This project stands out with its sophisticated gilding technique, bringing a magnificent beauty to the monument.
Present at the construction site during the last days of the project, we witnessed dozens of artisans and skilled workers working diligently. Each stroke, each layer of gold was meticulously cared for, bearing the mark of the quintessence of art from the ancient capital.
The artisans attached the horizontal board with the word Thai Hoa Dien (Chinese characters) to the main room of the palace at exactly 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 2024.

Restoring Thai Hoa Palace is not simply recreating an architectural work, but also a journey to preserve and promote heritage values.

The group of lacquer and gold leaf workers who are renovating Thai Hoa Palace is led by artisan Phan Canh Quang Thuan (51 years old, in Thuy Bieu Ward, Hue City). Mr. Thuan is a student of the late painter Do Ky Hoang, a lecturer at Hue University of Arts, a lacquer painter, who has researched the process of lacquer and gold leaf restoration and is also responsible for many projects to restore Hue's ancient capital relics in the past. Mr. Thuan studied lacquer and gold leaf with painter Do Ky Hoang since he was 20 years old. Up to now, he has been attached to the profession for more than 30 years and it is also a chance to be attached to Hue relics.
Thai Hoa gold plating process is very strict
Mr. Ho Huu Hanh, Director of Hue Monuments Restoration Joint Stock Company, said that the process of restoring wooden structures to restore monuments must follow strict procedures. The gilding and lacquering requires the main traditional materials, including lacquer (paint made from the resin of the lacquer tree of the Northern mountains and forests) and materials such as gold leaf, silver leaf, pigment, pine resin, tung oil, kerosene, white cloth, sandpaper, epoxy glue, finely ground wood powder, stone powder, etc.
The magnificent patterns have been completed.

Specifically, the raw paint after being beaten into cooked paint will be filtered through a layer of cloth to filter out the residue to remove impurities. The paint is then mixed with lacquer powder, turpentine, tung oil and kerosene solvent in the ratio to be beaten into vermilion paint (used for vermilion paint and gold and silver plating). The wood after being treated to prevent termites, cleaning the surface of the wooden structure, and sealing with epoxy glue.
The wooden column system and roof frame are all painted with magnificent gold.

Next, apply the first coat of primer with lacquer to allow the paint to penetrate deep into each wood grain, creating a bond between the wood surface and the subsequent paint layers. After this paint layer dries, the next step is to wrap the fabric to prevent wood cracking, creating an even and smooth surface, protecting the subsequent paint layers (applied to columns, three-way panels that do not touch).
The three-way system and other components are wrapped in fabric once. The column components are wrapped in fabric twice, then another layer of lacquer is applied to create a bonding layer for the next layer of hom paint. After wrapping the fabric, continue the hom process with a mixture of lacquer, stone powder, and wood powder to smooth the surface of the component, fill in the concave defects, prevent the finish layer from stretching, and tightly bond the gaps... After wrapping the fabric and finishing the painting, the worker begins to apply the primer. After the primer layer comes the test paint part, creating the base to prepare for the finishing color paint layer.

The project to preserve and restore the entire Thai Hoa Palace relic in the Imperial City, Hue started on November 23, 2021. After the groundbreaking ceremony, the Thai Hoa Palace was completely dismantled to carry out the overall restoration.
After 3 years of restoration, the temple has been restored to its original golden and magnificent appearance.

The project includes the following main items: renovating and reinforcing the foundation, restoring the tiled floor, Thanh stone steps, brick walls with original colors and other architectural details; renovating and reinstating the wooden frame system, roof system, wooden wall system, wooden doors; renovating and reinstating the throne, canopy and other furniture; reinforcing and adjusting the entire yard, retaining wall system, restoring railings and garden items, landscape, technical infrastructure... The project is invested with more than 128 billion VND (including central and local budgets and other mobilized sources).
