US Vice President JD Vance said on February 14 that Europe must strengthen its defenses so that Washington can focus on dealing with threats in other regions.
"We believe that Europe's increased defenses while the United States focuses on areas of the world that are at great risk are an important part of coming together as a common alliance," US Vice President JD Vance said at the Munich Security Conference, taking place in the German city of Munich, according to AFP.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has argued that it needs to refocus its strategic position away from Europe and towards Asia to face its main rival, China, according to AFP.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Vance told reporters in Munich that President Trump sees Europe taking a larger role in defense and that Germany has a big role to play. “It’s clear that Germany, the largest economy in Europe, will have a big role there,” Mr. Vance said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on February 14 that Europe would find it difficult to replace the US military on the continent, amid speculation that Washington might cut its forces. "We will have to compensate for what the US is doing less in Europe. But that cannot happen overnight," Mr. Pistorius said.
Pistorius said he had proposed a “roadmap” to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, after the two met at a NATO summit in Brussels. The plan included “changes in burden sharing” and “no dangerous capability gaps that will arise over time,” Pistorius said.
Mr Pistorius said Mr Hegseth "sees the issue in a similar way. "It would be good if we could quickly translate yesterday's verbal agreement into action," the German defence minister stressed.
