We realize that the fact that children are not able to go to school is causing many consequences such as: children cannot keep up with the curriculum, the school's teaching schedule is disrupted, due to many days off school, some children when returning to school will have many difficulties in absorbing the lectures of teachers... It is time for local authorities and parents to agree to put the safety and interests of students first.
Starting from February 6, 2025 (after the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday), 154 students at Tan My school, Quang Phuc Primary School No. 1, Ba Don town, Quang Binh did not go to school. After a week of Tet holiday, the school's Board of Directors and teachers were surprised when only one second grade student returned to school. The reason why students did not return to school was because parents whose children studied at Tan My school refused to let their children go to school.
It is known that the reason why parents do not send their children to school is because the school in Tan My is closed, all students go to Quang Phuc Primary School No. 1 to study. Parents said that: all students have parents working far away, have to live with grandparents, if they move to study far away from home, traveling and picking up will be difficult. Parents suggested a plan to repair the current Tan My school to ensure teaching and learning, instead of transferring students to study at the main school.
Inquiring about the school and local authorities, we learned that the satellite school in Tan My block, Quang Phuc ward, Ba Don town, Quang Binh is only about 2km from Quang Phuc Primary School No. 1. In reality, there are a few children living with grandparents and parents working far away, so picking them up and dropping them off is not convenient.
However, the fact that most parents use the excuse that the school is far from home and then force their children to drop out of school is unreasonable and does not put their children's right to education first. The reason why the local government moved the education of 154 students at Tan My school is because the classrooms at this school were built many years ago and are in danger of collapsing at any time.
The Center for Construction Quality Inspection (under the Department of Construction of Quang Binh province) on the inspection of the Tan My school reported the results on October 4, 2024, confirming that the load-bearing capacity of a structural part of the 5-room classroom block and the 2-room classroom block at the Tan My satellite school could not meet the requirements for normal use, and there was a local dangerous situation. Therefore, to ensure the safety of students and teachers, the Ba Don town government decided to temporarily close the Tan My satellite school and transfer all students to the main school with a spacious campus and full equipment to better serve the students' learning.
Mr. Phan Tien Lam - Principal of Quang Phuc Primary School No. 1 said: According to the direction of Ba Don town and Quang Phuc ward, Tan My satellite school must close in January 2025, because it does not ensure safety for teaching and learning activities. Accordingly, the school has organized 3 meetings to propagate and mobilize parents and prepare 6 classrooms with full equipment to welcome students to the new school.
It is known that after Tet holiday until now, local authorities in Ba Don town, Quang Binh as well as teachers of Quang Phuc Primary School No. 1 have organized many trips to the grassroots to persuade and persuade parents to let students return to school but have not had any results.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Thanh - Chairman of Quang Phuc Ward People's Committee said that the work of persuading parents to let their children go back to school is facing many difficulties. The local government's viewpoint is always to hope that parents at the Tan My satellite school agree to let their children transfer to the main school (Quang Phuc Ward Primary School No. 1) to ensure safety. Many teachers of Quang Phuc Primary School No. 1 have coordinated with local authorities and relevant functional forces to visit parents' homes to persuade them. However, the majority of parents still maintain their viewpoint, determined not to let their children study at the main school.
The local government has sent 6 teams, with more than 40 people including relevant authorities and representatives of the neighborhood's organizations and homeroom teachers, to directly go to each house to propagate and mobilize, explaining to parents to understand that sending their children to school is important, ensuring the rights of the children. As for elderly and sick parents, the locality is ready to temporarily arrange forces to pick up and drop off their children after school and from home to school.... However, parents in Tan My still do not agree. The children at the Tan My branch have not been to school for 3 weeks, the long break affects the legitimate rights of the students. Making up for the children in the coming time to keep up with the general program is facing many difficulties. The school has organized online teaching for students at the Tan My branch, but parents still do not let their children study online.
On the afternoon of February 20, working with local leaders in Ba Don town to learn about the actual situation, we learned that the local government is currently allocating funds to rebuild a new satellite school in Tan My according to the wishes of local people in Tan My. It is thought that students' education should be given top priority by adults. In the immediate future, the reconstruction of the school in Tan My cannot be completed overnight, so parents should try to arrange for their children to return to school.
