On the afternoon of January 9, Trieu Khuc villagers, Tan Trieu commune, Thanh Tri district (Hanoi) held a traditional festival to commemorate the national hero Bo Cai Dai Vuong Phung Hung, who brought a prosperous and peaceful life in the past.
The festival opened with the procession of King Phung Hung's royal robe and court dress from the Sac temple to Dai Dinh temple.
The palanquin went around the main roads of Trieu Khuc village amid the attention of locals and tourists.
The village is characterized by two ancient communal houses with majestic architecture, including the Communal House worshiping the royal decrees from the Le Canh Hung 44 (1783) to the Khai Dinh 9 (1924) period, which bestowed a beautiful title on the village's tutelary god, and the Great Communal House worshiping Bo Cai Dai Vuong Phung Hung.
The procession includes village girls performing Sinh Tien dances. Special folk cultural activities such as dragon dances, lion dances, and flag-running dances are also held during the three-day festival (from January 9-12).
A characteristic of the Trieu Khuc village festival is the folk dance called "the prostitute playing the bong" which attracts the attention of viewers.
Cao Xuan Huu Dong and Nguyen Hai Dang (13 years old), the youngest members of the dance team, said it took them 3 months to practice to perform this dance. "This is the first year I have performed. When I first started practicing, I found it difficult, but now I can dance with the experienced guys," Huu Dong shared.
This drum dance is performed by the young men of the village (who must be good-looking and unmarried according to the rules). There will be about 3-4 pairs of men dancing together, showing off their flexible movements. The requirement here is that the performance must be graceful, even a bit flirtatious.
The costume of the dance "Con dia danh bong" is performed by village boys pretending to be girls, with rosy cheeks, red lips, and a crow-beak scarf on their heads. They dance and beat the bong drum worn on their bellies in a playful and graceful manner.
Many families in the village set up altars with offerings of flowers and fruits as the procession passed by. The festival takes place annually at the Great Communal House to commemorate the merits of Bo Cai Dai Vuong Phung Hung, the hero who launched the uprising against the domination of the Northern invaders.
On the afternoon of January 12, there will be a flag-running ceremony around the main roads of the village before the procession of Bo Cai Dai Vuong Phung Hung's palanquin to the temple to worship Sac.
