The attack happened near a resort west of New Providence, the Bahamas’ most populous island, police said. The woman was with a relative when the shark attacked, and the two were rescued by a lifeguard.
"CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) was performed on the victim. However, she suffered serious injuries to the right side of her body, including her hip and upper limbs," police said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Although fatal shark attacks are uncommon in the Bahamas, at least two other incidents have been recorded recently.
A 47-year-old German woman went missing on a scuba diving trip in waters off West End, Grand Bahama, on November 21 after being attacked by a shark, police said.
In September 2022, a 58-year-old American woman died in a shark attack while snorkeling with her family in the waters of New Providence.
