In the beloved Truong Sa archipelago, perhaps no symbol is more sacred than the sovereignty markers. Not only are they structures that demonstrate independence and sovereignty, the images of these markers are also deeply engraved in the memories and minds of many Vietnamese people, reminding us of our national pride.

Expressing patriotism

Many people dream of one day having the opportunity to cross the sea to Truong Sa to visit the navy soldiers, see the DK1 platform and especially to once touch the sacred sovereignty marker. However, due to the geographical distance, that dream has not yet come true for many people.

With their hearts always turned towards the sea and islands, many people have worked hard and devotedly to create models of Truong Sa milestones on the mainland. Anyone who comes to see these models will feel that even though their footsteps have not yet set foot on Truong Sa, their hearts are already there.

The "steel land" of Binh Duong commune, Thang Binh district, Quang Nam province - which has been awarded the title of hero three times for its great contributions to the cause of defending the Fatherland - started construction of this meaningful project in August 2016. The project was completed on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam Veterans Association (December 6, 1989 - December 6, 2016) according to the wishes of veterans who once fought and worked in Truong Sa and all the people in this coastal commune.

The project was built according to the prototype of the sovereignty marker on Truong Sa Lon Island, 6 m high from the base to the top of the column, 1.7 m wide, cast in extremely sturdy reinforced concrete. The project has the meaning of a connection between the heroic tradition of Binh Duong land and the patriotism and determination to protect the integrity of the sea and islands of today's generation.

Meanwhile, in Da Nang, the Vietnam Record Organization in 2016 awarded a certificate of record for "The largest model of the sovereignty landmark of Truong Sa Dong island made of granite on land" to Mr. Tran Van Xuat.

Mr. Tran Van Xuat's model of the sovereignty landmark of Truong Sa Dong island was recognized as a Vietnamese record.

This former soldier always missed Truong Sa so he came up with a special idea. The landmark was assembled from many pieces of black stone, polished and meticulously carved, completed after 4 months. The model is 6 m high, 1.5 m wide, with four sides engraved with large letters: Truong Sa Dong Island, latitude 08 degrees 55 minutes, longitude 112 degrees 21 minutes. Next to it, Mr. Xuat planted 2 square banyan trees to provide cool green shade. The project not only attracted the attention of locals and tourists but was also a place for his comrades to reunite after many years apart.

Leaving the Central region, we went to Cam Khe district in the ancestral land of Phu Tho and recorded 25 life-like Truong Sa landmarks appearing in 25 schools. With socialized funding, Cam Khe district realized the dream of seeing Truong Sa landmarks of students in just 2 months of March and April 2021.

In order to increase the love of the sea and islands for students, Thot Not District Youth Union, Can Tho City has also erected Truong Sa milestones right in the yard of some schools in the area. Necessary information is fully recorded on these milestones.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Van Sinh - in Hon Dat town, Hon Dat district, Kien Giang province - has been nurturing the idea of creating a model of the Truong Sa sovereignty landmark out of baked clay, even though he has never set foot on this sacred archipelago. In 2013, after seeing a model of the Truong Sa sovereignty landmark on Hon Me peak in Tho Son commune, Hon Dat district, he immediately started to test cast this model from clay.

The products Mr. Sinh created are highly accurate and beautiful, no different from the original version. As a result, his products are loved by many people, who buy them as souvenirs.

Every young person should be a milestone in life.

Not long ago, on December 23, 2021, the Ho Chi Minh City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese held an inauguration ceremony for the model of sea and island sovereignty markers.

The model is 3 meters high, with a 2 meter wide base, placed in the premises of the committee; brought from Hanoi by Mr. Le Hong Quan - an Angolan expatriate - to present on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army. This shows that our overseas Vietnamese, no matter where they are in the world, always have special feelings for their homeland's sea and islands.

In all three regions of the country, there are sacred Truong Sa landmark models, expressing the deep affection that people have for the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

The milestones, whether on the island or on the mainland, all carry a consistent message: Affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagos. They are priceless spiritual symbols, contributing to affirming sovereignty, arousing patriotism and national pride.

For today’s young generation, many have heard a lot about the Truong Sa sovereignty landmark symbol but have never been to the island. Therefore, these models help to shorten the distance between the mainland and the island, bringing closer to the understanding of beloved Truong Sa.

Students have the opportunity to touch and hug milestones, listen to teachers explain about longitude and coordinates to determine the location of the island on the map; listen to stories about Truong Sa as well as the difficult life of navy soldiers. The vivid images present in schools are valuable materials, educating students about patriotism. The awareness formed in students firmly believes that Truong Sa is forever an archipelago of Vietnam.

Only when you learn and understand this clearly, will you love Truong Sa more, and appreciate the soldiers and navy soldiers who firmly hold guns in their hands to guard the land and sky day and night. Each soldier is a symbol of sovereignty milestones on islands and borders.

Hopefully, in the coming time, these creative models will continue to spread widely, so that every citizen will always see the sea and islands very close to them in every beat and breath of life; to remind the young generation to strive to study, contribute, and build and protect their homeland and country.

And, each young person should be such a milestone in life!

We are the people of the generation that inherits the precious legacy of independence and freedom that our ancestors had to shed so much blood to obtain. Therefore, in any circumstance, we - the core of which is the enthusiastic youth - must be conscious of preserving, uniting our strength, together creating living milestones to firmly protect sacred sovereignty, for the eternal existence of the country, the brocade and the position of a sustainable, independent, self-reliant and prosperous Vietnam.
