Natural disasters, including prolonged droughts, more devastating earthquakes, floods and extreme weather events, affect most regions of the world. Many of these disasters are becoming more frequent or more severe due to the impacts of climate change.

Scientists recommend that organizations develop plans to respond to potential disasters in specific regions and closely monitor ongoing events, such as the prolonged drought in southern Africa, which could continue or worsen in 2025.

While most natural disasters such as droughts tend to be local or regional, the risk of large-scale disruptions to global or regional supply chains remains high. For example, low water levels have affected the Panama Canal and the Rhine River in recent years, disrupting shipping through these vital shipping lanes.

According to Stratfor Worldview Magazine , risk mitigation strategies for businesses should include proactively preparing contingency plans for shipping and suppliers in the event that major shipping routes — such as the Rhine, Mississippi and other rivers, or canals affected by drought — are disrupted.
