Former world number six Matteo Berrettini was left stunned and nearly fainted in the second set of his first-round Miami Open match against Andy Murray.

The incident occurred in the eighth game of the second set, when Berrettini was trailing 2-5 and preparing to serve. The Italian lost his balance and had to put his racket on the court to avoid falling. He then wiped his eyes and moved to the bench area. The umpire and his opponent Andy Murray both looked worried, but Berrettini signaled that he was fine.

Miami's heat and humidity are believed to have caused Berretini to faint. Earlier, young player Arthur Cazaux fainted during a match against Harold Mayot and had to leave the court in a wheelchair. The Frenchman spent the night in hospital to stabilize his blood pressure and heart rate.

Berrettini’s condition was less severe than Cazaux’s. He had his blood pressure checked on the court by a doctor, drank water and an energy gel, and then returned to the court. But Berrettini was not at his best. He lost 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 and was eliminated from the tournament after his opening match.

Berrettini has been battling injuries for nearly two years. He hasn't won an ATP Tour title in 20 months. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist recently split from girlfriend Melissa Satta to focus on his career. He reached the final of the Challenger tournament in Phoenix last week, losing to Nuno Borges.

Murray will play 29th seed Tomas Etcheverry in the second round. The other notable match of the round will be between one-handed left-handers Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The top seeds at the Miami Open have first-round byes. Those competing today include Jannik Sinner, the defending runner-up and second seed, Andrey Rublev, Tommy Paul and Daniil Medvdev.
