On the afternoon of July 1, news from Can Tho General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just performed laparoscopic surgery on a rare case of chronic cholecystitis, in which the patient's gallbladder contained more than 1,100 gallstones.

Previously, female patient LTM (64 years old, residing in Tra On District, Vinh Long) was admitted to Can Tho General Hospital. Through clinical examination and ultrasound, the patient was diagnosed with chronic cholecystitis due to multiple gallstones and indicated for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

More than 1,100 gallstones were removed from the patient's gallbladder.

Relatives said that about 3 years ago, when going for a health check, the patient was diagnosed with gallstones. However, because the patient was afraid of surgery, he let the condition linger, and every time he felt pain, he bought medicine to control it. In the past month, the pain got worse, so the patient was taken to the hospital for treatment and surgery.

After the gallbladder removal and gallbladder incision surgery, doctors recorded more than 1,100 stones (tiny stones that cannot be counted) formed in the patient's gallbladder. Currently, one day after the surgery, the patient's health is stable.

Dr. La Van Phu, Head of the General Surgery Department, Can Tho General Hospital, said that this is the case with the largest number of gallstones ever recorded at the hospital. "Fortunately, the patient was promptly operated on by the surgical team. If this case had acute cholecystitis, necrosis, and gallbladder perforation, imagine that more than 1,100 of these stones had fallen into the patient's abdomen. Only a miracle could save the patient," said Dr. La Van Phu.

One day after surgery, the patient gradually recovered and had good communication.

Dr. La Van Phu recommends: Gallbladder stones are a fairly common disease. If diagnosed and treated early by laparoscopic surgery, the results are usually good. On the contrary, if left for a long time, it can lead to complications such as stones moving down the common bile duct. At that time, treatment will be very difficult or cause other complications such as necrotizing cholecystitis, acute pancreatitis, sepsis, acute pancreatitis that can be life-threatening. Therefore, people with gallbladder stones who have pain symptoms should go to the hospital for early surgery to avoid unfortunate complications.
