NDO - During Tet, children often play too much, stay up late, eat irregularly, and eat a lot of candy and sweets, which affects their health.

Risks to children from meals during Tet

Specialist Doctor I Dinh Tran Ngoc Mai, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, recommends that during the Lunar New Year, many children are so busy playing that they forget to eat and sleep, which can easily cause them to lose weight. Waking up late, eating hastily or only giving children milk will cause them to lack nutrients.

Leftover food that is reheated many times or left at room temperature for too long can also cause digestive disorders in children. Therefore, maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle is still very important for children.

In addition, at this time, families often stock up on food, including cakes, candies, and sweets. Giving children too many sweets will make them lose their appetite, not feel hungry, and not be interested in the main meal. This can cause malnutrition; and at the same time, weight gain.

"Eating too much sugar and starch will make children mistakenly think that it is an acceptable habit and form this bad habit. Parents should be careful not to let their children eat too much candy and sweets and keep these foods out of their sight," Dr. Mai noted.

Storing a lot of food in the refrigerator will not ensure the temperature and air circulation in the refrigerator, which will create favorable conditions for bacteria to grow and cause food poisoning. Children may have stomachaches, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.

In addition, Tet dishes often contain few vegetables and a lot of protein and fat, and the disrupted daily routine can cause constipation in children. You should pay attention to supplementing vegetables, filtered water, and digestive enzymes for children during these days.

Therefore, Dr. Mai emphasized that everyone needs to pay attention to following the rules of eating cooked food and drinking boiled water, not leaving food at room temperature for more than 2 hours, and arranging food storage in the refrigerator properly.

Build a reasonable diet

How to build a nutritional regimen to ensure adequate nutrition for children, not lacking or excessive during Tet, it is very important to ensure that children's daily activities and eating schedules are not disrupted too much.

According to Dr. Truong Hong Son, Director of the Institute of Applied Medicine, young children need to maintain regular meals and meals to keep their digestive system stable. Families should feed their children small portions, not too full at one time, especially foods rich in protein or fat. Prioritize easy-to-digest foods such as porridge, soup, vegetable soup, steamed chicken and fish; supplement with fruits rich in vitamin C (oranges, grapefruits) or bananas to aid digestion.

Limit foods that are not suitable for children such as fried foods, greasy foods that can easily cause bloating and indigestion; sweets, soft drinks with high sugar content increase the risk of digestive disorders and bloating. Fermented foods, pickles (pickles, kimchi) can easily irritate the stomach. In particular, avoid giving children foods that they have never tried before, because they can cause allergies or indigestion.

Choose fresh, clean food, limit processed foods or foods that have been left out for a long time; dishes must be cooked and reheated before eating; do not give children food that has been left out overnight to avoid the risk of infection.

Encourage children to drink enough fluids such as water or unsweetened fresh fruit juice to aid digestion; avoid carbonated or sugary soft drinks as they can easily cause bloating.

Instead of giving your child candy, you can prepare healthy snacks such as: Yogurt, cheese; nuts such as almonds, cashews (unsalted, unsweetened); fresh fruit (apples, pears, watermelon).

Exercise after meals to help children digest, avoid lying down immediately after eating.

If your child has signs of bloating, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea or abdominal pain, you should: Give your child warm water to drink; massage the abdomen clockwise to help reduce bloating; monitor your child's condition and take him or her to the doctor if symptoms do not improve.

Families need to prepare basic medicines for children such as probiotics, fever reducers, or electrolyte replacement solutions (ORS) in case the child has digestive problems.
