During its initial beta phase, Alibaba's Tongyi Wanxiang app will only be accessible to business customers.
On July 7, Alibaba Group officially launched Tongyi Wanxiang, a tool that uses artificial intelligence to create images from text descriptions, within the framework of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference taking place in Shanghai, China.
The app will compete with US rivals such as Midjourney Inc's Midjourney and OpenAI's DALL-E, which already have a large user base globally.
During its initial beta phase, Alibaba's Tongyi Wanxiang app will only be accessible to business customers.
Previously, in April, Alibaba Cloud, a cloud computing company under Alibaba Group, also launched a text generator similar to ChatGPT called Tongyi Qianwen.
In addition, the company also launched ModelScopeGPT, an AI tool for developers.
Recently, a number of major Chinese technology companies have been actively launching AI products and services following the success of the ChatGPT chatbot.
According to consulting firm McKinsey, generative AI is estimated to add $7.3 trillion to the world economy each year.
In addition to Alibaba, two other Chinese tech giants, Baidu and SenseTime, have also recently launched AI-based image-generating tools.
