Vietnamese documentary - Children of the Mist - was in the top 15 nominees on the shortlist for Best Documentary Feature at the 2022 Oscars.
The documentary Children of the Mist by female director Ha Le Diem (31 years old) received a lot of attention from film news sites before the film's name was announced in the shortlist of Oscar nominations.
Di does not want to be like her mother and sister. She wants to finish her studies and have the right to decide her own future. But it is difficult for Di to decide everything by herself, because her life will be influenced by the community around her, by her own family members and by long-standing bad customs that are not easy to completely eliminate.
Because of choosing a direct storytelling style, prioritizing the truth, minimizing commentary, and letting the characters express their emotions, Ha Le Diem spent nearly 4 years filming the scenes (Photo: The Guardian).
In the film, female director Ha Le Diem tried to protect Di, but what could the female director do for Di? The film is considered to evoke many thoughts and emotions in the audience.
Ha Le Diem is a Tay ethnic, she comes from Bac Kan. This documentary helped Ha Le Diem become the first Vietnamese female director to have a documentary shortlisted for an Oscar.
Ha Le Diem admits that she is a poor filmmaker. When making the film Children in the Mist , she had almost nothing but a clear passion.
In 2017, during a field trip to Sa Pa, Lao Cai, she was arranged to stay with a Hmong family. Here, she met Ma Thi Di, a curious and active girl. Taking Di to play around the village, Diem came up with the idea of making a film to record Di's childhood.

In nearly 4 years, Diem can't remember how many times she has traveled from Hanoi to Sa Pa and vice versa. The film Children in the Mist premiered at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival (Netherlands) in November 2021. To date, the film has participated in more than 100 festivals around the world.
Looking back on that journey, Ha Le Diem confided: "When I started making it, I didn't think my film could go this far. Thanks to Children in the Mist , I had the opportunity to visit many countries and attend many film festivals. I learned more about cinema in other countries and also had the opportunity to share about Vietnamese cinema, learning valuable filmmaking experiences."
Diem's wish is that many other young people will come to documentaries and tell stories about life, the country, and the people of Vietnam: "There are simple stories, but through the language of cinema, they touch the hearts of viewers, helping to spread many meaningful things."
