Deadline commented that after a very impressive but also heavy trio of films at Cannes, Emelia Perez, The Substance and Anora , the film Grand Tour came to the Cannes Film Festival as a gentle balm.
The film premiered at Cannes on May 22, with the participation of actress Tran Lang Khe, daughter of director Tran Anh Hung.
A breath of fresh air amid the fierce Cannes race
Grand Tour takes the audience on a journey through the Far East. It is a unique film that blends past and present, documentary and fiction.
This is the first time Portuguese director Miguel Gomes has a film in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

Variety called the film a dreamy, crazy journey through East and Southeast Asia. The newspaper said that amid the intense Cannes competition with heavyweight films, Grand Tour is a fascinating, lively, and time-spanning exploration.
The Hollywood Reporter ran a compelling, elusive headline, writing: "Gomes has forged a unique style over the years, blending past and present until they are indistinguishable.
It's as if the historical piece we're watching is actually a documentary from over 100 years ago that's just been unearthed."
Deadline notes that fans of Gomez's directing style will enjoy the eccentricity, irony, and striking black-and-white cinematography. But those unfamiliar with the director's style may "need a pillow."
The Guardian reviews The Grand Tour as a sweet, quirky colonial game of hide-and-seek between an engaged couple.
Tran Anh Hung's daughter attends Cannes red carpet
In Grand Tour, Burma during World War I, Edward (Gonçalo Waddington) is a British official in Rangoon awaiting the arrival of Molly (Crista Alfaiate), the woman to whom he has been engaged for seven years.

Before Molly arrived, Edward gave up again and went to Singapore, then continued to Bangkok, Saigon, Manila and Osaka, as well as Shanghai, Chongqing and Tibet, where he almost lost track.
The second half of the film is from Molly's perspective as she follows Edward's footsteps across the continent, along the way meeting her Vietnamese companion (played by Tran Lang Khe).
The two women reach Tibet, believed to be the last place Edward set foot, but Molly suddenly falls seriously ill.

Last year, actress Tran Lang Khe and her family - including her parents and brother Cao Phi - attended the Cannes red carpet when the film The Pot-au-feu (A Thousand Tastes of Humanity) by director Tran Anh Hung competed for the Palme d'Or.
In 2018, Tran Lang Khe also played the main role in the film Les confins du monde, which competed in the Directors' Fortnight category at Cannes.
