Agriculture is the fulcrum

Speaking at the conference to review 2024 and deploy the 2025 plan for the agriculture and rural development sector on the afternoon of December 27, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that the agricultural sector in 2024 faced many difficulties, including the impact of storm No. 3. However, under the strong leadership and direction of the Government and the Prime Minister, the agricultural sector has achieved many positive results; notably, the export turnover reached a record of more than 62 billion USD, with an impressive growth rate of 3.2%.

In particular, some industries have made remarkable progress, reaching new record export levels and affirming their position in the international market, such as: vegetables and fruits (7.12 billion USD, up 27.1%), rice (exported over 9 million tons, reaching nearly 5.8 billion USD, up 23%), coffee (nearly 5.5 billion USD, up 29.1%)...

In 2024, the entire agricultural sector proactively supported businesses, cooperatives and farmers with effective solutions to both cope with fluctuations and maintain and develop production. Thanks to that, the agricultural production structure continued to shift towards multi-value integration, improving efficiency, linking with the market, increasing the proportion of products with competitive advantages and high value, while ensuring quality and food safety.

Vietnam's agriculture not only ensures national food security but also integrates deeply into the world. Many key agricultural products have expanded their markets, contributing to affirming the important position of agriculture in the national economy.

Specifically, the total production value (GRDP) of the whole industry achieved an estimated growth rate of 3.3%, the forest coverage rate reached 42.02%; the rate of communes meeting new rural standards reached 78.7%; the rate of rural households using clean water meeting standards reached 58%. The economic structure of the industry and the agricultural production structure continued to shift towards integrating multiple values, improving efficiency, linking with the market, increasing the proportion of products with competitive advantages and high value.

The agricultural sector has strongly shifted its thinking to a green economy, increasing added value and product quality; At the same time, the sector has increased the application of sustainable and organic agricultural production processes. The project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission specialized rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030" has been effectively implemented.

By 2025, the agricultural sector needs to achieve a higher growth rate.

Entering 2025, an important milestone in the new era - the era of national development, the agricultural sector sets a target of industry-wide growth of 3.4% to 3.5%; total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reaching about 64-65 billion USD; the rate of communes meeting new rural standards reaching 80.5-81.5%; and the forest coverage rate remaining stable at 42.02%...

To realize this goal, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has clearly identified specific tasks and solutions, focusing on creating development space and promoting growth. In particular, promoting industry restructuring, improving productivity, product quality and production and business efficiency are top priorities. The Ministry also sets a target of exceeding the set growth rate.

Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh acknowledged and commended the impressive results of the agriculture and rural development sector in 2024. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that natural disaster prevention and mitigation is an outstanding achievement of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, especially the recovery work after Typhoon Yagi - a big challenge but also a testament to the sense of responsibility and effective leadership of sectors and levels.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that 2025 is the year of acceleration and breakthrough; if we do not accelerate and break through, we will fall behind. In 2025, the agricultural sector needs to achieve a higher growth rate of 3.5 - 4%; agricultural, forestry and fishery exports reach 70 billion USD; forest coverage remains stable at 42.02%. The Prime Minister requested to continue removing bottlenecks in institutions, policies and mechanisms to develop the agricultural sector quickly and sustainably. The agricultural and rural development sector also needs to further promote the development of science and technology, innovation and digital transformation to serve the development of green economy, circular economy, knowledge economy and creative economy. At the same time, actively coordinate with localities to remove the IUU "yellow card".

On behalf of the leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Minister Le Minh Hoan thanked the Government and Prime Minister for their attention and close direction to the agricultural sector in recent times. The Minister also affirmed to seriously accept the Prime Minister's instructions.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will have specific solutions to implement the key tasks assigned by the Prime Minister in 2025. The entire sector will be determined to ensure food security nationwide and for export, continuing to be a solid “pillar” for the economy,” said Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan.
