The ASEAN Film Festival (AFF) is an activity organized by the Hong Kong-ASEAN Association together with the Consulates General of ASEAN countries in Hong Kong and many partners. The purpose of this cultural event is to introduce the diverse beauty of culture and customs of the ASEAN community to Hong Kong audiences through film stories, while helping audiences gain a deeper understanding of Southeast Asian culture, promoting cultural exchanges and deepening cultural and economic relations between the two places.
14 works from 8 ASEAN cinemas including Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore were screened at this Film Festival.
During the 2-week film festival, films will be screened at M+Cinema, The Sky and The Miller Theatre (Asia Society Hong Kong).
Hong Kong has long been regarded as the “Cinema Capital of Asia”, known for its rich history and unique film themes. Over the years, the Hong Kong government has actively promoted and revitalized the creative industries.
Speaking to reporters, Vietnamese Consul General in Hong Kong Pham Binh Dam said that this film festival was an initiative of the Consulate General with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Hong Kong's partners, and was very successful.
Participating in this Film Festival is part of the effort to carry out cultural diplomacy, promote the country and its people, help friends understand more about Vietnam, thereby creating a desire to visit and do business in Vietnam.
Hong Kong is a very large international center, a very suitable place for Vietnam to have more promotional activities. In the coming time, the Consulate General will have more activities to promote Vietnam.
According to Mr. Pham Binh Dam, the mission of representative agencies and diplomatic agencies is to bring Vietnam to the world and the world to Vietnam, so promotional activities, cultural, sports and tourism exchanges will take place regularly.
On the occasion of the upcoming National Day, September 2, the Consulate General will organize a series of diplomatic, cultural and business activities, many in one campaign to promote Vietnam to the world, connect Vietnam with international friends, including a large Vietnamese art troupe performing for Hong Kong audiences.
The film “Yen’s Life” by Vietnam Feature Film Studio, directed by Dinh Tuan Vu, tells the story of a fate arranged by her parents, Yen had to get married at the age of 10. Since then, Yen’s life has been closely linked to the ups and downs of her husband’s family.
The film won major awards such as the Silver Lotus for Best Film at the 19th Film Festival in 2015, the Silver Kite for Best Film, the Golden Kite for Best Film Director, the Golden Kite for Best Film Music at the Kite Awards 2015, and the Grand Prize at the 2016 Philippine International Premiere Film Festival.
The film “I see yellow flowers on the green grass” by Thien Ngan Film Joint Stock Company, directed by Victor Vu, tells the story of the dreamy, innocent, poor and tragic youth of two brothers Thieu and Tuong in the South Central region in the 1980s. Their adolescence and early conflicts, sincere brotherly love and their pure pain are like a ticket to take viewers back to their childhood.
The film won the "Best Film" Award at the 2015 Silk Road International Film Festival in Fuzhou, China, and the Golden Lotus Award at the 19th Vietnam Film Festival for the feature film category in 2015.
Sharing with the audience at the premiere of the film “I see yellow flowers on the green grass” via video, director Victor Vu expressed that he was very moved when reading the novel by author Nguyen Nhat Anh and that was the main reason why Victor Vu wanted to adapt the novel into this film. The film was broadcast in 2015 and the director felt great that after many years, the film still has the opportunity to reach audiences around the world, thanking the ASEAN Film Festival in Hong Kong for including the film in this year's program.
In this screening, Thai cinema has the most films, including Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, The Medium, The Legend of Muay Thai: 9 Satra, Friend Zone and The Adventure of Sudsakorn.
