According to information from the National Civil Police of El Salvador, the stampede during the match between the Alianza and FAS teams at the Estadio Cuscatlan stadium on May 20 left 12 people dead and dozens injured.
Chaotic scenes at Estadio Cuscatlan
The cause of death of these 12 fans was suffocation and being trampled.
Specifically, there were many people trying to jostle at the gate of Estadio Cuscatlan stadium to watch the match and created a chaotic scene.
“The number of fans who poured through the gate was too great. Some were still lying in the tunnel. Others tried to climb into the stands and run onto the pitch. Many were suffocating,” a volunteer from the Rescue Commandos first aid group described.
El Salvador's Interior Minister Carlos Bidegain said that as soon as the chaos broke out, civil protection agencies quickly arrived and rescued those trapped.
However, there are still many people who have died due to suffocation for too long.
Meanwhile, President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele affirmed that he will open a comprehensive investigation to find out the cause of this unfortunate incident.
"From the team, the management team, the stadium, the ticket office, the league, the football federation... all will be investigated.
Whoever the perpetrators are, they will not escape punishment," Mr. Bukele announced on Twitter.
