In the first days of the year, we had the opportunity to record the preparations for the fishing season of fishermen in Tra Cu and Chau Thanh districts... the awareness of fishing vessel owners as well as the role of fishing vessel captains have very well followed the recommendations and information from the Provincial IUU Steering Committee in complying with regulations on combating IUU fishing.
According to statistics from the People's Committee of Hoa Thuan Commune, Chau Thanh District, the locality has the largest number of fishing vessels in the district. Currently, the whole commune has 30 fishing vessels; of which, 15 fishing vessels are over 15m long; 15 vessels are under 15m long); the activities of fishing vessels are mainly with trawl nets, round nets and folding nets.

Ms. Dao Thi Nhung, Vinh Bao Hamlet, Hoa Thuan Commune said: her family currently has 01 means of seafood exploitation (TV 95078 TS), capacity 340CV specializing in trawling and operating mainly in the adjacent sea areas of Ca Mau and Kien Giang provinces... Since implementing the regulations on IUU, her family has fully complied with the regulations as recommended by the Department of Fisheries - Quality Management; Representative Office of Fisheries Inspection, Control and Supervision (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tra Vinh); Provincial Border Guard... ensuring the installation of VMS equipment; declaring the catch after fishing and returning to port...
Comrade Huynh Van Toi, Secretary of the Party Committee of Hoa Thuan Commune, Chau Thanh District, said: Before 2023, the locality had 02 fishing vessels violating IUU; up to now, local fishing vessels have all overcome and no longer violate IUU. For local Party committees and authorities, regularly deploy and propagate to fishing vessel owners and their families to comply with regulations and instructions of functional sectors on IUU. Continuously and regularly receiving and updating feedback information from the province and district to the locality for each fishing vessel owner in order to promptly make recommendations to local captains and fishing vessel owners to limit IUU violations.
At Dinh An Fishing Port (Dinh An Town, Tra Cu District) on February 5 (January 8), the atmosphere of fishermen preparing to set sail for their sea voyage was quite bustling, promising a successful fishing season. In particular, the regulations on procedures in implementing IUU were posted and given quite detailed instructions right at the receiving yard for ships docking at the port to unload products.
Fisherman Tran Cong Duc, Hamlet 1, Dinh An town said: compliance with IUU is very important for fishermen, to raise awareness of compliance with regulations in seafood fishing; not violating foreign waters and fully declaring seafood products during and after fishing... Currently, his family has 06 offshore fishing boats, service boats with more than 60 workers participating on the fishing boats. The main fishing areas are in Con Dao, Kien Giang, Ba Ria - Vung Tau...
Fisherman Tran Thanh Huong, residing in Hamlet 1, Tra Cu town, said: his family has a fishing boat (under 15m long) so they mainly exploit in the open sea. Compliance with the exploitation area, implementation of regulations on declaring output and installing navigation equipment... is currently 100% required not only for his family but also for other fishing boat owners. If they do not comply, the authorities will not allow the boat to leave the port; if discovered, they will be severely punished.

Also according to fisherman Tran Cong Duc: in the 2024 fishing season, the average income of fishermen is about 8 - 10 million VND/month; due to unfavorable weather last year (strong winds), fishing boats had to return to shore early and have been there since mid-November 2024 until now. It is expected that they will set sail on January 9; due to the large cost of preparing to set sail each time (about 30 - 35 million VND/boat) such as ice, fuel, and food; so the boat owners also consider the time and fishing season; the time the boats operate at sea lasts from 15 - 20 days/trip. After catching a catch, the boat owners will contact the logistics service ship to weigh the products and provide materials, fuel, etc. for the fishing boats to continue to stay at sea.
