On March 6, the Russian Defense Ministry revealed that a Russian T-72B3 main battle tank destroyed the third US-made M1A1 SA Abrams tank used by Kiev forces in the Avdeevka direction.
In a briefing, the Russian Defense Ministry said: “The T-72B3 tank destroyed the US-made Abrams with the first shot” in the direction of Avdeevka yesterday (March 5).
Video footage of the attack on the M1A1 SA Abrams tank shows it first being knocked out by a guided anti-tank missile and then, seconds later, exploding, completely destroyed. A US-made M2A2 ODS-SA Bradley infantry fighting vehicle is also seen near the third destroyed tank.
The T-72B3 is a modernized version of the Soviet-made T-72 tank with significantly improved fire control and sighting systems.
The tank's main armament is the 2A46M-5 smoothbore gun, capable of firing guided anti-tank missiles, specifically the 9M119 Refleks. The laser-guided missile fired from the gun allows the tank to hit targets at twice the distance of a 125mm shell. Its tandem warhead can penetrate armor up to 900mm thick.
The Abrams tank attacked on March 5 was the third one destroyed by Russian fire so far. The previous two tanks were also destroyed by Russia in the direction of Avdeevka.
The US has provided Ukraine with 31 Abrams tanks and an unspecified number of M1150 assault vehicles (ABVs) in 2023. In addition to the losses of the Abrams tanks, so far, two Ukrainian ABVs have also been destroyed by Russian fire in the direction of Avdeevka.
Also on March 6, information about the Russian military destroying the M142 HIMARS multiple launch rocket system of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was posted by AVP. Accordingly, the M142 HIMARS system was destroyed in the Nikanorovka area of the Dobropolsky district of the Donetsk People's Republic (self-proclaimed). This incident not only demonstrates the technical aspects of modern warfare but also shows the strategic approaches of both sides in the conflict.
The location of the M142 HIMARS system attacked was less than 40 km from the front line. Public images of the attack showed that Iskander OTRK air-launched ballistic missiles or the latest Tornado-S MLRS missiles were used.
The destruction of the HIMARS system during preparation for firing demonstrates the element of surprise and the effectiveness of reconnaissance and strike operations of the Russian armed forces.
According to open sources published by AVP, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been supplied with 20 M142 HIMARS MLRS and 15 M270 MLRS.
