Representing the French delegation, Ms. Valérie Verdier expressed the message of this working trip: to coordinate and build a strong cooperative relationship between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and French research, training and development units and agencies, within the framework of the agendas between the two countries.
Ms. Valérie emphasized that Vietnam has a great position in the field of scientific research on natural resources and environmental issues. The French Republic is also a country that has made many contributions in this field. In recent times, many experts from the Institute for Development Studies have come to Vietnam to conduct research in the environmental field. Therefore, Ms. Valerie once again affirmed the goodwill and efforts of the French Institute for Development Studies in coordinating with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
Sharing about the French National Museum of Natural History, Mr. Bruno said that with a history of more than 400 years of development, this is one of the two oldest museums in the world, with links to many research units. The Museum's experts also actively participate in policy support activities related to resources and environment, and biodiversity inventory in France. It is expected that the Museum will develop cooperation in other countries and hopes to have many activities in Vietnam.
Also during the working session, the French delegation’s scientific researchers expressed their desire to participate in long-term cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, especially in implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and global commitments on climate change response that Vietnam has participated in. The French government has pledged to support 50 million USD for developing countries participating in JETP, aiming at renewable energy solutions and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Regarding climate change response, Country Director of the French Development Agency in Vietnam (AFD) Herve Conan shared that AFD will continue to coordinate with relevant parties to implement many research and cooperation projects to minimize the impact of climate change on Vietnam, and to more thoroughly assess extreme weather events. AFD will also implement phase 2 of the GEMMES Vietnam project, focusing on a fair energy transition and its social impact.
In response to the French delegation, Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh expressed his respect and appreciation for the vision of French scientists who took the first steps in natural sciences with many museum systems. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment was assigned by the Government to be in charge of 9 areas, and may have many cooperative activities with French research institutions.
Vietnam is one of the 16 countries with the highest biodiversity in the world and is also an official member of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Over the past time, Vietnam has always been very aware of its responsibility as a member country and has made great efforts to fulfill common commitments to contribute to the global goal of protecting natural ecosystems and biodiversity.
Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh also shared his views on the relationship between humans and nature, the relationship between Vietnam's ecosystem in global correlation; historical and cultural factors that need to be considered when researching and developing topics and projects on environmental resources. The impacts of climate change and human economic growth have been and are strongly changing biodiversity, raising many urgent issues that need to be resolved. The Deputy Minister hopes that the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and France will continue to develop, especially in the field of environmental resources and implementing climate change response goals.
Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Valérie expressed that the meeting was an opportunity for French scientists to gain new perspectives and new thoughts on cooperation activities in Vietnam. Ms. Valerie expressed her wish to work with Vietnam in general and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in particular to train French and Vietnamese youth to have more solid knowledge, contributing to the fields of environmental resource research.
