Ruud van Nistelrooy wants to have talks with Leicester City's board. |
With Leicester City facing relegation back to the Championship, the focus now turns to plans for next season. Van Nistelrooy has insisted he will honour his contract until 2027 and stay at the club even if they finish in the bottom three.
However, he now insists there needs to be unity between the two parties. “I think it is very important to have a common view with the club about the new season,” Van Nistelrooy said when discussing his role next season.
“We need to clarify that in the next few weeks,” the Dutch coach stressed. “After taking over in December and going through the winter transfer window, entering the new season and the challenges ahead, I need to know what the club is capable of. That unity has to be established.”
The Dutchman wanted confirmation from the club that they considered him the right man to lead the team. He also wanted the club to provide financial and strategic guarantees to meet his demands. In other words, Van Nistelrooy wanted to be sure that the club truly believed in his abilities and was willing to invest in the team's development.
If this is done, Van Nistelrooy can begin preparing for the new season, with the almost certain aim of guiding Leicester City to promotion from the Championship back to the Premier League.
Asked whether decisions for the 2025/26 season needed to be made immediately, Van Nistelrooy replied: “That was decided yesterday. For now, we are focused on getting points in the remaining eight games. But at the same time, there are two objectives. One is clarity about my future, the other is unity – we have to find a common voice.”
Van Nistelrooy also mentioned the mid-season transfer window, an issue that made him unhappy with Leicester's board due to lack of financial support.
