The province has 25 coffee products of 21 entities that have been certified OCOP, of which 6 products have achieved 4 stars and 19 products have achieved 3 stars. The above results show that the role of agricultural extension activities is extremely important in receiving advanced scientific and technological advances, accompanying farmers, cooperatives, and enterprises in applying science and technology to production, contributing to the sustainable development of the province's coffee industry.

In recent times, the Dak Nong provincial agricultural extension sector has regularly received advanced scientific and technical advances, thereby transferring them to people through the construction of sustainable coffee production models and projects. Typically, in the period of 2021-2023, the provincial Agricultural Extension and Agricultural and Forestry Seed Center has implemented a coffee production model towards organic traceability and value chain linkage on an area of 10 hectares, with 10 households in Tan Thanh and Nam Nung communes (Krong No district). Evaluating the results, 8/10 hectares of the model area were granted Vietnam Organic certification, with an average yield of 3.2 tons/ha, and a profit of 167,879,000 VND/ha, an increase of 38,268,500 VND/ha compared to mass-produced coffee gardens.
Through the results of the model, farmers have realized the benefits of organic coffee cultivation, thereby changing their farming methods, aiming at organic coffee production to improve product quality, bringing higher economic efficiency compared to traditional coffee production; creating a sustainable ecosystem, creating conditions for beneficial microorganisms in the soil to thrive, improving the soil environment in a beneficial way, helping plants absorb maximum nutrients, increasing soil fertility, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, healthy plants, limiting the use of chemicals and investing in fertilizers for plants, creating clean products, ensuring quality according to standards and being environmentally friendly, serving well for export needs.
In 2024, in Dak Glong district, the Provincial Agricultural Extension and Agricultural and Forestry Seed Center built and developed a model of intercropping some fruit trees in coffee gardens with a scale of 10 hectares/10 participating households. The model helps people change their habits from pure planting, without shade trees, to intercropping fruit trees in coffee holes with pests and low productivity. Intercropping some fruit trees in coffee gardens helps people increase their income, stabilize productivity, and develop sustainable coffee. The participating households highly appreciate the model and hope that the model will be replicated.
To improve varieties, increase productivity and quality of coffee, in 2022, the Provincial Agricultural Extension and Agricultural and Forestry Seed Center selected Dak R'lap district and Gia Nghia city to implement the Sustainable Coffee Replanting Model adapting to climate change. The model was deployed on an area of 2 hectares, with 4 participating households, installing an entire advanced water-saving irrigation system for coffee gardens.
According to the assessment of farmers, the use of the irrigation system has saved 30% of irrigation water and 70% of irrigation labor. As a result, the cost of intercropping and care has been greatly reduced. Through the model, people know how to arrange intercropping plants in the garden reasonably, reducing competition for nutrients and light, helping the photosynthesis process of plants to be better. At the same time, the advanced irrigation system saves water, watering accurately, watering correctly and with the right amount of water, thus contributing to protecting water resources for the community and society. The model has gradually changed traditional production methods to responsible production associated with the application of new technical advances, adapting to climate change in the current period.
In Tuy Duc, Dak R'lap, Dak Song and Dak Mil districts, in 2020, the Provincial Agricultural Extension and Agricultural and Forestry Seed Center selected to deploy an advanced irrigation model to save water by spraying rain at the base of coffee trees, with a scale of 14 hectares, with 16 households participating, with a total implementation cost of more than 632 million VND. Up to now, 13/14 hectares have been installed and 7/7 hectares of the model have been accepted. Through acceptance, the model meets technical requirements such as: Each nozzle neatly sprays a coffee tree, the water flow per tree is 70 liters/hour, the fertilizer hut works well; helping people save irrigation water, fertilizer, labor, fuel, changing the traditional production method.
In 2023, from the funding source of the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, the Provincial Center for Agricultural Extension and Agricultural and Forestry Seeds successfully implemented the Robusta Coffee Production Support Project in the business phase, deployed in the communes of Dak Plao, Dak Ha (Dak Glong district) and Dak Ngo commune (Tuy Duc district) with the participation of 245 households, mainly ethnic minorities.
Households participating in the project were trained in techniques and guided in the garden, contributing to changing old, ineffective farming practices, shifting to applying science and technology to sustainable coffee production, aiming to increase productivity, quality, increase income, and improve living standards. Coffee productivity has since increased from 100-200 kg of coffee beans/ha (valued at 10-20 million VND/ha) compared to when households had not participated in the project, and the garden has grown well. With the achieved results, the Dak Nong agricultural extension system has affirmed its role, function and task, making an important contribution to the sustainable development of the coffee industry.
To continue improving the quality, value and sustainable development of the coffee industry, according to the Dak Nong Province Agricultural Extension and Seed Center, in the coming time, departments, branches, districts and cities need to promote propaganda activities, mobilize people to apply sustainable farming according to international standards; promote coffee replanting and improvement and introduce high-yield, high-quality varieties that adapt to climate change into production; Applying scientific and technical advances in planting, caring, harvesting, preliminary processing, processing, and preserving coffee in a sustainable and safe coffee chain, associated with environmental protection, contributing to promoting the Project on Restructuring the Agricultural Sector towards increasing added value, adapting to climate change and sustainable development of Dak Nong Province by 2020, with a vision to 2030 and the Project on Planning High-Tech Agricultural Zones in Dak Nong Province by 2030, with a vision to 2035 as a foundation for industry development in the following years.
