According to information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), in 2024, the agriculture and rural development sector will face numerous difficulties due to the impact of El Nino, complicated drought and saline intrusion in the South, storms and floods in the North, diseases on crops and livestock always have the potential to break out, and barriers from increasingly strict export markets...

To proactively respond and make efforts to carry out the dual task of "both responding to natural disasters and organizing production", the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has proactively coordinated with localities to direct the adjustment of production plans, crop structure, conversion of crop and livestock structure, and variety structure in accordance with weather developments and market signals, ensuring maximum limitation of damage caused by natural disasters, storms, and epidemics.

Typically, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development flexibly directed the conversion of about 116 thousand hectares of ineffective rice land to grow vegetables, fruit trees, industrial crops, and aquaculture with higher economic efficiency. This helps the value of 1 hectare of cultivated land in 2024 to reach an estimated 127 million VND, an increase of 7.4% compared to 2023. Proactively and flexibly adjusting the crop structure and production schedule helps localities to be ready to respond to drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion, especially in the Mekong Delta and the Central and Central Highlands regions.

Thanks to that, the agriculture and rural development sector has achieved many great and comprehensive achievements in all fields. For example, in the field of cultivation, the output in 2024 will reach 48.1 million tons of grain output, 43.7 million tons of rice output (yield of 61.4 quintals/ha). The output of some key crops will increase sharply, such as durian (1.45 million tons), dragon fruit (1.35 million tons), rubber (1.37 million tons), coffee (1.95 million tons) ... The livestock sector will reach 8.1 million tons of fresh meat of all kinds, 1.2 million tons of milk, 19.7 billion eggs ...

In particular, the Project “Sustainable development of one million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030” has initially achieved positive results. Pilot models help reduce input costs by 20-30%, increase productivity by 10%, increase income by 20-25%, and reduce 5-6 tons of CO2/ha.

Aquaculture output in 2024 is estimated at 9.6 million tons. Forestry has an estimated concentrated planted forest area of about 282 thousand hectares, up 0.2% and 130 million scattered trees; timber output from planted forests is estimated at 22.88 million m3, up 9.8%. Salt industry in 2024 will have a salt production area of more than 10,872 thousand hectares, with an output of about 1,100 thousand tons, up 23.6%.

The total export turnover of agriculture, forestry and fishery products of the whole sector is estimated to reach a record high of 62.5 billion USD (up 18.7% compared to 2023), the trade surplus reached a record high of 17.9 billion USD (up 46.8% compared to 2023). There are 7 items/groups of items with an export value of over 3 billion USD including: Wood and wood products 16.2 billion USD, vegetables and fruits 7.12 billion USD, rice 5.75 billion USD, coffee 5.48 billion USD, cashew nuts 4.38 billion USD, shrimp 3.86 billion USD, rubber 3.46 billion USD. The record trade surplus of the agriculture and rural development sector is even more meaningful for the country's economy in a difficult year (the whole country's trade surplus was only 25 billion USD).

The management of quality and food safety of agricultural products continues to be strengthened, and people's trust in domestic agricultural products is increasing.

Thanks to creative, flexible, innovative and breakthrough thinking, in 2024, the agriculture and rural development sector attracted 1,500 newly established enterprises, bringing the total number of enterprises operating in the agricultural sector to about 17,300, an increase of 7.5% compared to 2023. In addition, a number of large corporations and enterprises continued to increase investment in agriculture. By the end of 2024, the country will have 101 Unions and 21,700 agricultural cooperatives (an increase of 1,200 cooperatives compared to 2023).

Regarding new rural construction, by the end of 2024, about 79 - 79.5% of communes nationwide will meet new rural standards. Five provinces, including Nam Dinh, Dong Nai, Ha Nam, Hung Yen and Hai Duong, have been recognized by the Prime Minister as having completed the task of building new rural areas...

Along with that, the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program continues to be implemented synchronously and widely by localities, becoming a priority solution in rural economic development. The whole country has over 14,642 OCOP products with 3 stars or more (an increase of 3,586 products compared to 2023), of which 73.2% are 3-star products, 23.5% are 4-star products, 51 are 5-star products, the rest are 5-star potential; there are 8,086 OCOP entities, of which 32.7% are cooperatives, 24.1% are small enterprises, 42.7% are production establishments/business households, the rest are cooperative groups...

In 2024, agricultural export value will reach more than 30 billion USD
