I welcome the initiative of Nhan Dan Newspaper to organize the launching ceremony of the Special Information Page on General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh and the Discussion with the theme of General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh and “Things to do immediately” . I am also very honored to attend this launching ceremony.
I still remember, the story happened 36 years ago. 1987 was the first year of the Renovation period. Renovation was an extremely creative decision of our Party proposed by the 6th Party Congress. That year, Comrade Nguyen Van Linh was elected as the Party General Secretary. He is considered the first General Secretary of the Party in the Renovation period. I myself was elected to the Central Committee, was an alternate member and was appointed as Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper .

According to the tradition of our Party, the Party General Secretary always takes special care of the Party newspaper - Nhan Dan Newspaper - the voice of our Party, State and people.
People working for Nhan Dan Newspaper will never forget the image of comrade Nguyen Van Linh as a collaborator who personally brought the first article under the pen name NVL to the editorial office, opening the column "Things to do immediately", severely criticizing negative actions in society, which caused a stir in the early period of renovation.

Responding to a foreign journalist asking why there were times when NVL’s articles were not in the newspaper, he said: “Because NVL’s articles are like turning on the engine, pressing the gas to make the car run. And that car must be the journalists, the masses… Gradually, there will be some other articles by NVL, gradually we must also press the gas to make the car run at a faster speed.”
He answered very modestly. In fact, what “Things to Do Immediately” achieved went beyond the size of the articles when it presented a working style, a style of saying and doing , saying and doing. Therefore, it is not by chance that people call Nguyen Van Linh… “Mr. Saying and Doing”.
There is one small detail I would like to add: In response to the special care of General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh for Nhan Dan Newspaper, Nhan Dan Newspaper assigned a Deputy Editor-in-Chief - Comrade Huu Tho, a veteran journalist of the Vietnamese press, to be a special envoy to the General Secretary to both assist with work and grasp his opinions and instructions for the newspaper.

Comrade Nguyen Van Linh himself also visited Nhan Dan Newspaper many times, officially and unofficially, when there were new policies that needed to be propagated or new issues that arose that the Party newspaper needed to take an attitude towards. He directly approved the revised mantle of Nhan Dan Newspaper, attended and spoke at the ceremony to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first issue of Nhan Dan Newspaper (March 11, 1991)...
Comrade Nguyen Van Linh left us on April 27, 1998, at the age of 83. His passing left the Party, the State and the people with much sorrow. However, his great career, including the “Things that need to be done immediately” career, still lives forever.
