Lessons from the last 3 SEA Games
When the Vietnamese men's football team won the 30th SEA Games in 2019 and the 31st SEA Games in 2022, we had good strikers who did a good job of scoring goals. At the 30th SEA Games in 2019, the striker role belonged to Nguyen Tien Linh, this was the striker who scored very important goals for Coach Park Hang-seo's team in that year's tournament.
Nham Manh Dung (17) was a good striker of U.23 Vietnam at SEA Games 31 in 2022.
At the 31st SEA Games in 2022, Tien Linh will continue to play this role, with the support of Nham Manh Dung, who is also a player who can play well in the center forward position. Nham Manh Dung was the author of the only goal scored against U.23 Thailand in the final match of the 31st SEA Games, bringing home the championship.
On the contrary, at the 32nd SEA Games in 2023, the U.23 Vietnam team at that time failed because we did not have a good striker who was reliable enough in scoring goals. Nguyen Van Tung played this role at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia, but the player currently playing for Hanoi FC at that time did not have a high scoring efficiency. The absence of a good striker made the team's finishing less effective, and when the team launched an attack, the midfielders had difficulty finding targets to pass the ball into the opponent's penalty area.
That is exactly what the U.22 Vietnam team needs to study before the 33rd SEA Games this year. In the 22-year-old age group, Vietnamese football currently has promising strikers including Nguyen Dinh Bac, Nguyen Quoc Viet and Bui Vi Hao. Unfortunately, none of these players play as a center forward when playing for their home club.
Finding a good center through testing
Quoc Viet is at a disadvantage in terms of physique (only 1.73 m tall), and is even more unsuitable for playing as a center forward, a position that requires frequent contact with the opponent's center back and frequent aerial battles. The other two players, Dinh Bac (1.80 m) and Vi Hao (1.81 m), have an advantage in terms of physique and can be trained to become center forwards when needed.
Vi Hao (15) can play the role of center forward of U.22 Vietnam at SEA Games 33
In particular, Bui Vi Hao was tested by coach Hoang Anh Tuan in the center forward position of the Vietnam U.23 team, at the 2024 U.23 Asian tournament. In that tournament, Vi Hao showed promise when he was pushed to play the highest position in coach Hoang Anh Tuan's winning scheme.
This is a solution that coach Kim Sang-sik can completely refer to when training the U.22 Vietnam team in the upcoming training sessions. Mr. Kim can put Vi Hao in the center forward position, train Vi Hao in the playing style, how to receive the ball when turning his back to the opponent's goal (a familiar thing for players playing in the center forward position).
Vi Hao's adaptability is not bad, so hopefully the player currently playing for Binh Duong Club will be able to become a good striker in the near future, when he is asked to play in this role. Another strength, worth trying Vi Hao in the role of striker, is that this player's starting speed is very high. This will create a great advantage for Vi Hao in particular and the U.22 Vietnam team in general, when we suddenly switch from defense to attack, the back line suddenly "throws" the ball long for the striker above to race with the opponent's defense.
The U.22 Vietnam team has an advantage over its opponents in terms of experience (many players in the 22 age group have been regularly called up to the national team in the past year), in terms of technique, and in terms of personnel depth. Now, if we can solve the problem of finding a good striker, our chances of winning at the 33rd SEA Games against Thailand, Indonesia, or Malaysia will increase significantly!
