HAGL's dream start
Hanoi FC entered the big match with HAGL in round 11 of V-League 2024 - 2025 with an overwhelming advantage. Not only did they just beat Da Nang to return to the championship race, coach Le Duc Tuan and his team also faced a team that had lost all 3 recent away matches. In the match at Hang Day Stadium last season, Hanoi FC also easily won 2-0 against HAGL.
However, before they could dominate the game, the home team Hanoi was doused with cold water. In the 6th minute, Dinh Hai had a dangerous tackle with the sole of his boot on Van Son of HAGL. Initially, the Hanoi midfielder received a yellow card, but after referee Nguyen Viet Duan was consulted by VAR to review the slow-motion replay, the card was changed to red.
Despite being short-handed, Hanoi FC still tried to dominate the game. In the 14th minute, Van Quyet crossed the ball as if setting it up for Duy Manh to attack. The 1996-born centre-back defeated young player Ly Duc in the air, but the header sent the ball just wide of the post.
Then Duy Manh played the main role again, but this time it was the situation that caused Hanoi FC to receive a penalty. In the 29th minute, the 29-year-old player had an off-ball collision that caused the HAGL striker to fall in the penalty area. Initially, referee Nguyen Viet Duan waved his hand, but after the match had been going on for another minute, Mr. Duan was consulted by VAR to review the situation.
After carefully checking the slow-motion situation, the referee awarded HAGL a penalty. Coach Le Duc Tuan of Hanoi Club reacted strongly, but the decision did not change.
On the 11m mark in the 35th minute, Jairo Rodrigues decisively kicked the ball into the left corner, putting HAGL ahead.
Jairo's goal made the match much more exciting, as Hanoi FC poured forward to attack while HAGL returned to their usual defensive counter-attacking position. The away team could have left the field with a goal doubling the gap when the duo Ngoc Quang and Minh Vuong coordinated well twice to tear apart Hanoi's defense, but the common point of both plays was that Minh Vuong missed a very regrettable opportunity when the goal was wide open.
On the opposite side, Hanoi Club also had opportunities, but Van Quyet and Duy Manh failed to take advantage.
Brain Balance
In the second half, Hanoi FC pushed up their formation and pressed HAGL. However, facing the tight defense of the away team, coach Le Duc Tuan's players created very few opportunities.
When the way to the goal of goalkeeper Trung Kien became unclear, Hanoi FC was suddenly "given a gift". In the second half's injury time, defender A Hoang jumped high and pressed the home team's striker in the penalty area. After reviewing the slow-motion replay, referee Viet Duan pointed to the 11m mark.
However, on the penalty spot, Tuan Hai's shot hit the crossbar. The 1998-born striker's miss in the 90+11th minute ended Hanoi FC's chance to score. Even if HAGL had been more careful in the final minutes, the home team would not have lost by just 1 goal.
Defeating Hanoi FC 1-0, HAGL rose to sixth place with 16 points. Meanwhile, former champion Hanoi dropped to fourth place with 17 points.
