Early in the morning, the fields of Tra Cong village, An Hoa commune, An Lao district, Binh Dinh province are bustling with people. Under the fields covered with lush green cucumbers, groups of farmers are bending over to pick melons while chatting and laughing.

Previously, Tra Cong land, An Hoa commune was used by people to grow chili, but the harsh weather, combined with unstable market prices, made the chili plants unable to produce high productivity, and gradually people lost interest. There was a time when this land of more than 10 hectares was abandoned, with only a few households growing corn and other crops, but it did not bring high economic value.

In the past two years, with the participation of the Party Committee, the government, and the Farmers' Association in propaganda and mobilization work, along with the quickness of many households in the village, Tra Cong people have once again transformed the land to grow vegetables. Initially, a few households planted cucumbers. Seeing that the cucumbers grew well, had high yields, and brought in good income, in 2024, many families invested in growing cucumbers with a large area of nearly 5 hectares.

This season, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dat's family (Tra Cong village, An Hoa commune) planted more than 3 sao of cucumbers, this is the second year she has grown cucumbers. The first year, her family was the only one in the village who boldly switched to growing cucumbers, while working, they were worried about not achieving the desired yield and not being able to sell at a good price, but after only a few months, the whole crop of cucumbers helped her earn nearly 10 million more.

Excited about the success of the first crop, the couple continued to expand the melon area and learn more about planting and care techniques. This year, Mrs. Dat planted 3 sao of melons. Participating in the melon growing model implemented by the Commune Farmers' Association, her family and other households were supported with seeds, materials, care techniques and all products were guaranteed for sale. Thanks to training in science and technology and adequate irrigation, the family's melon area has developed well and is now in the harvest stage.

Next to Mrs. Dat's melon field, Mr. Nguyen Van Nghi is using dry branches to make a trellis for the melon field. Mr. Nghi said that he planted nearly 2 sao of melons, one sao was harvested for sale during the recent Tet holiday, and the other sao was planted for more than a month and is flowering. He planted at different times so that he could have melons to sell for a long time, and not sell them in bulk when the melons are in season, so that he could sell them at a better price.

Ms. Tran Thi Dong - President of the Farmers' Association of An Hoa commune said: Currently, cucumbers are priced from 8,000 - 10,000 VND/kg, households growing cucumbers all have quite high and stable income, households growing a small amount will get 5 million VND, households growing a lot will get 20 million VND.

The Farmers' Association will encourage people to increase crops, striving to grow 3 crops of melon each year. In addition, they will grow more green beans, bitter melon, and squash to make full use of the land area in Tra Cong, have more stable income and be attached to the fields.
