On the rise again

After a period of stagnation, durian prices today, February 21, 2025, have increased significantly thanks to the recovery of exports and a sharp decrease in domestic inventories.

According to records at export purchasing warehouses in the Mekong Delta region, the price of Monthong durian grade A is currently fluctuating between 87,000 - 92,000 VND/kg, an increase of 10,000 VND/kg compared to 5 days ago.

Similarly, the price of Ri6 durian type A also increased slightly, currently trading at 63,000 - 65,000 VND/kg, 5,000 VND/kg higher than last week.

At the garden, the price of durian bought in bulk also recorded an increase: Musang King: 100,000 - 110,000 VND/kg; Monthong: 80,000 VND/kg; Ri6: 55,000 VND/kg

Durian price today 212 On the rise again

According to Mr. Trinh Thanh Tung, Director of Dang Khoi Agricultural Products Company Limited (HCMC), one of the main reasons for the increase in durian prices is that the inventory from containers exported to China has been sold out.

Besides, it is currently off-season, durian production is not as abundant as before, making the supply more scarce, contributing to the price increase. However, Mr. Tung also said that the current price is still lower than the same period last year.

"Durian prices have increased but have not yet reached their peak compared to last year. At this price, durian suppliers for the domestic market can still sell. If the purchase price at the garden increases to 100,000 VND/kg, it will certainly be very difficult for consumers to access this fruit," Mr. Tung shared.

According to some durian export buyers, the price increase is due to China starting to import again. However, businesses are still very cautious when bringing goods to this market, so the price has only increased slightly and has not changed dramatically.

Although durian prices have shown signs of recovery, the export market still faces many technical barriers from China. Specifically, China has changed its quality control regulations for imported durian, requiring shipments to be tested for amber (a preservative) and cadmium (a residue from fertilizer).

This regulation slows down customs clearance of goods, putting pressure on export businesses and durian farmers.
