After completing the project of raising native chickens associated with product consumption linkage, many households in Xuan Loc commune (Thuong Xuan) still maintain and continue to develop their chicken flocks.
Livelihood support
Implementing the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction, the Provincial Cooperative Union has implemented the Livelihood Diversification Project, developing poverty reduction models to support the livelihoods of people in disadvantaged areas to become self-reliant and develop a sustainable economy. Each project implemented has been well received by the people and efforts have been made to achieve the highest efficiency.
As one of 77 households participating in the project "Raising black sows for reproduction according to the chain in Thuong Xuan town and Ngoc Phung commune, Thuong Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province", in June 2023, Ms. Le Thi Hoa's family in Hoa Lam village, Ngoc Phung commune (Thuong Xuan) was supported with 2 breeding pigs. Her family always focuses on cleaning the barn, treating the breeding environment and providing appropriate care. Ms. Hoa said: "The breeding pigs provided have reached a weight of more than 20kg, at the same time, they are supported with animal feed, so the pigs grow and develop quite well. Currently, after 8 months of raising, the family has 11 more piglets. This is a great motivation for us to develop and expand the pig herd. At the same time, it is also a source of finance for the family to invest in barns, develop the economy, stabilize their lives, and gradually escape poverty sustainably".
It is known that the project of raising black sows for reproduction according to the chain linkage under the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction in 2023, assigned by the Thanh Hoa Provincial Cooperative Union to plan and estimate, Cua Dat Aquaculture and Service Cooperative is the unit in charge of the linkage. With a focus on training to improve capacity and livestock farming techniques for people, the units also strictly check the stages of selecting breeds and animal feed. Director of Cua Dat Aquaculture and Service Cooperative Nguyen Van Sinh said: "We strictly implement the stages of selecting breeds and feed to bring people quality animals. Along with that, during the implementation process, the technical staff of the Cooperative is always ready to support people in caring for and preventing diseases... Up to now, more than 60% of the pigs provided have entered the reproductive stage, hoping that people will continue to breed and increase the pig herd in the coming time".
Benefiting from the project of raising native ducks in the direction of reproduction associated with the chain, Mr. Luong Van Yeng in Giang Phin village, Tri Nang commune (Lang Chanh), said: "From the number of ducks supported, my family has both taken advantage of the pond area and had more suitable livestock to develop the family economy. Up to now, after 6 months of raising, the flock of ducks has laid eggs. In addition, the cooperative also introduced egg purchasing units for the households. Thanks to that, my family has a stable income of about 1.2 - 1.5 million VND/month".
According to statistics, in 2023 and 2024, the Provincial Cooperative Union has implemented 6 poverty reduction projects, from the capital of Project 2 on diversifying livelihoods, developing poverty reduction models, under the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction in 2023 and 2024. Including 2 projects supporting rice varieties, 2 projects supporting chicken varieties, 1 project supporting pig varieties and 1 project supporting duck varieties. Accordingly, thousands of poor households, near-poor households, and newly escaped poverty households in Thuong Xuan, Ba Thuoc, and Lang Chanh districts have benefited. It is noteworthy that the models have achieved initial results and have been maintained and selected for replication by local people.
Replicating effective crop and livestock models
After a period of implementation, the model of raising native chickens associated with product consumption linkage has created jobs for about 60 workers from poor and near-poor households in Xuan Loc commune (Thuong Xuan). Along with that, the project has affirmed its effectiveness and gradually expanded among the people. Mr. Hoang Van Mao in Pa Co hamlet, Xuan Loc commune, said: "The support for breeding stock and animal feed from the project has helped my family have more livelihoods. After the end of the project, the supported chicken flock achieved a revenue of nearly 5 million VND, my family has more funds to continue investing in production development. Currently, we have raised a flock of more than 100 chickens and continue to apply biosafety farming techniques".
In Ha Trung commune (Ba Thuoc), the project "Producing areca nut sticky rice associated with linkage and product consumption" invested by the Cooperative Union (2024 crop) has brought income to 136 local households. Along with that, local people have found units and consumption markets for this specialty rice variety. Therefore, in the spring crop of 2025, the areca nut sticky rice variety has been widely replicated by people and put into production, with a total area of tens of hectares, with the expectation of achieving outstanding revenue and profit.
According to the assessment of the Thanh Hoa Province Cooperative Union, the implementation of projects to support plant and animal seedlings from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction is a practical form of livelihood support, with long-term significance, suitable for the actual conditions of poor and near-poor households in disadvantaged localities of the province. Thereby, it helps families have conditions to work hard, boost production, improve efficiency, increase income to escape poverty sustainably.
Chairman of the Provincial Cooperative Union Nguyen Dinh Tuan emphasized: "The Provincial Cooperative Union continues to do a good job of reviewing and selecting suitable poverty reduction projects and capable and reputable implementing units to implement in the province's disadvantaged districts. Along with that, through the projects, training, coaching, and technology transfer activities will be integrated so that the poor have the knowledge to effectively care for the model. From there, not only giving "fish" but also supporting people in difficult areas with "fishing rods" to help people escape poverty sustainably.
