US President Donald Trump has insisted that nuclear negotiations with Iran are a priority over military action. In a related development, a Russian diplomat said the US is not ready to resume serious discussions on nuclear disarmament.

In an interview with the New York Post on February 7, Mr. Trump said: "I want to reach a non-nuclear agreement with Iran. I prefer that to bombing." However, President Trump refused to reveal details about the possible negotiation plan with Tehran.

Earlier, on February 5, President Trump announced that he prioritized a "definite nuclear peace agreement" with Iran, allowing Tehran to develop peacefully, and affirmed that related work needed to start now.

In 2015, Britain, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, France and Iran signed a nuclear deal called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which proposed lifting sanctions in exchange for Iran limiting its nuclear program.

During President Trump’s first term, the US withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Tehran. In response, Iran announced a gradual reduction of its commitments under the deal, including restrictions on nuclear research and uranium enrichment levels.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said Washington needed to increase pressure on Iran, over allegations Tehran is trying to build nuclear weapons.

In a development related to the issue of nuclear arms control, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva (Switzerland), Gennady Gatilov, recently said that the US is not ready to resume serious discussions with Russia on nuclear disarmament.

In an interview, Mr. Gatilov emphasized: "In fact, there is no and cannot be a resumption of a serious dialogue on nuclear arms control, which was interrupted at Washington's initiative. The US side is not ready for this. And how can there be a normal dialogue between countries when one side does not consider the other as an equal partner, does not take into account its legitimate interests, especially in the field of security?"

The Russian permanent representative added that instead, the US is seeking to inflict maximum damage on Moscow in the military, financial, economic, political and other spheres through every action taken by Washington.

“They say, ‘We will undermine your security and pretend nothing happened, and you – Russia – will help us do this by reducing your own military potential through signing new legally binding agreements.’ This cannot happen,” the diplomat argued.
