Vietnamese language exam attracts many candidates across Japan

The 8th Vietnamese Proficiency Test took place at Osaka University (Japan) organized by the Vietnamese Proficiency Test Association (VTS) in coordination with Osaka University, the Center for Vietnamese Studies, the Vietnam-Japan Economic Cooperation Promotion Association (VJECPA) and the Kanda Tokyo Foreign Language Academy.


This year's exam received a large response from candidates from many localities across Japan, with 20 localities having candidates participating.

This year, there are 100 candidates registering for level A exam, 58 candidates registering for level B exam and 7 candidates registering for level C exam.

The oldest candidate was 70 years old, registering for level A and B exams, while the youngest candidate was 8 years old, registering for level A exams.

The exam fee for level A is 5,000 Yen, level B is 9,000 Yen, and level C is 11,000 Yen. A candidate can take both levels at the same time.

Most candidates are people who want to work related to Vietnamese or have parents of Vietnamese origin.

Besides, many people said that they learn Vietnamese because they have Vietnamese friends or have been to Vietnam and love the country, people, especially the attractive dishes of Vietnam.

Kagawa Naho, 18 years old, whose mother is Vietnamese, expressed her desire to learn Vietnamese so that she can talk to her mother and grandparents, as well as be able to do a job related to Vietnamese in the future.

Nakamura Yuki is taking the Vietnamese proficiency test in Osaka for the second time with the desire to work in Vietnam and learn Vietnamese well.

The oldest contestant, Mr. Yanagichi Taiyo, 70 years old, said he often visits Vietnam because he has many Vietnamese friends. He really likes life in Vietnam and the purpose of learning Vietnamese is to integrate into the country where he wants to live long term.

The Vietnamese proficiency test is considered a language bridge between the two countries in the context of Vietnam-Japan relations being upgraded to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Besides, with the Vietnamese community in Japan increasing, the need for native language communication becomes important and urgent in Vietnamese families.

According to Professor Shimizu Masaki - Head of the Vietnamese Department at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Osaka University, Chairman of the Examination Council, the Vietnamese proficiency test has been held since 2020 with the aim of spreading, teaching and learning Vietnamese in Japan. It is expected that in 2026, this Vietnamese test will be recognized by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training.

Ms. Le Thuong - Principal of Cay Tre Vietnamese Language School, Director of the Vietnam Studies Center, the co-organizer of the exam, said that with the desire to spread and enhance the Vietnamese language in Japan, the Center organizes many activities related to the Vietnamese language in the Kansai region, including the Vietnamese proficiency exam.

This exam is held periodically in February and August every year, attracting a large number of candidates from localities near Osaka.

VTS Association President Kenji Tomita - former Head of the Vietnamese Language Department at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Osaka University, is a person who loves Vietnamese language and culture.

After retiring, he made efforts to contribute to the development of Vietnam-Japan relations by organizing Vietnamese proficiency tests with the desire to promote Vietnamese language learning for second and third generation children of families in Japan with Vietnamese parents as well as Japanese friends who love Vietnamese.

Professor Tomita said that the VTS Japan Association was established with the mission of promoting and developing many exchange activities between the two countries through carrying out activities to improve the level of education and research in Vietnamese, thereby contributing to the development of education and academia in Japan as well as to international understanding and friendship.

As planned, the 9th Vietnamese proficiency test will take place in August 2025 in Osaka and Tokyo.
