The amended law requires the Minister of the Interior to establish an Electoral Reform Advisory Council within four months of promulgation of the amendments.
The council will be tasked with conducting independent investigations and consultations, making non-binding recommendations on possible electoral system reforms for future parliamentary and provincial legislature elections after the 2024 elections.
Previously, the 1998 Election Law was deemed unconstitutional because it stipulated that only members of political parties could run for and participate in elections to the National Assembly and local legislatures.
The newly amended electoral law allows independent candidates to run in elections to the National Assembly and provincial legislatures.
President Ramaphosa stressed that the amended electoral law marks an important milestone in the development of South Africa's democracy.
