Journalism takes truth as a premise for existence

Along with the development of the digital revolution, the situation of information disturbance in cyberspace tends to increase with many extremely complex variations. This poses more challenges for journalists in the process of providing information and orienting public opinion.

Talking to Nguoi Dua Tin , Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Loi - Editor-in-Chief of Kinh te do thi Newspaper, assessed that truthfulness, alertness, information control and compliance with professional ethics are the ultimate principles that a journalist must remember in the current press environment.

Because according to him, technology and the Internet have created many opportunities for the public to participate in the process of producing information content. Meanwhile, the public crowd always has both invisible and visible power.

“The press and media are not only places to provide accurate and useful information to the public, but also to guide public opinion and refute false rumors. Many journalists always keep in mind that the responsibility of journalists is only to expose and report news, while the Government and public agencies must “take responsibility” for all conflicts, problems and shortcomings that are exposed,” Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Loi commented.

However, in reality, the social responsibility of the press is not only to disseminate information and expose the truth, but also to provide social orientation and social management, which means that the press must have more social responsibility as the mouthpiece of Party, State, social organizations and as a forum for the people.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thanh Loi, journalists need to demonstrate their role and social orientation in that not every issue can be brought to the mass media, but requires journalists to have "professional sensitivity" in selecting, processing and having a dose of information. The problem of journalists using rumors on the Internet to "legitimize" their articles does not only occur in Vietnam, but also appears in many countries around the world.

In reality, information on social networks is multi-dimensional and difficult to verify whether it is true or false. If journalists and reporters easily “legitimize” such false information, it will negatively affect or insult the reputation and honor of organizations and the dignity of citizens, confuse information, and cause public outrage.

Therefore, Mr. Loi emphasized that when exploiting information on the Internet, especially personal blogs, journalists are required to be alert, recognize right from wrong, and comply with professional ethics.

“If the press cannot guarantee authenticity, it will inevitably lose its fundamental value in the communication process and lose the basic professional responsibility it must shoulder. That is why, up to now, the press has always believed that authenticity is the highest principle of journalism.

The press takes the truth as a premise for its existence! The basic mission of the press is to help the public learn about the true state of change in the objective environment. Therefore, the press is forced to truthfully reflect objective issues, not report false news," Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thanh Loi emphasized.

Journalists must have talent and virtue.

Mr. Luong Ngoc Vinh - Head of the Department of Propaganda, Academy of Journalism and Propaganda, realized that in order to orient public opinion, in any era, the press must have strength and prestige. In which, the strength of the press is fast, timely, and accurate information. And prestige means that the information of the press must be sharp, attractive, and meet the increasing needs of the public, and journalists must have talent and virtue.

With sensitive content related to politics, culture and religion being very complex issues that greatly affect political and social stability, Mr. Vinh believes that the press cannot stand aside but must proactively participate in orienting public opinion with a pioneering and proactive spirit.

In particular, the timeliness and accuracy of information are the most important. Unlike social networks that reflect instantly and directly, press information must also be verified and assessed through many levels, so it is often slower. To ensure timeliness, press agencies must forecast situations and trends early to proactively take a step ahead to dominate the information front, not letting information on social networks lead public opinion.

Quickly but with utmost caution, journalists must use their political perspective, that is, dialectical materialism methodology; the Party's guidelines and viewpoints, the State's laws; the nation's cultural traditions, the good teachings of religions... From there, make objective, correct, reasonable and emotional comments and assessments to guide public opinion.

“When there is a problem, we must immediately speak up and report the news in a sequence depending on the process of collecting and assessing information. When we have not yet had time to assess the political and ideological aspects, to ensure timeliness, the press should guide the public to the values of truth, goodness, and beauty first - politics and ideology later,” Dr. Luong Ngoc Vinh expressed his opinion.

According to experts, in order to do the above, in addition to professional skills, journalists must study political theory, grasp the Party's guidelines and viewpoints, State laws, and have deep and broad knowledge in those sensitive fields.

Only then can journalists and press agencies be able to make timely and accurate assessments and judgments about events, things, and people that are of public interest in order to guide and orient public opinion .
